Such heavy debates and discussions here lately...so here's a lighter topic to chew on for a bit.

Think of something you love to do. A sport, hobby or whatever. Is it better to be a proffessional or an amateur?

I shall withhold my answer for a few

Discuss!

Amateur is someone who does it for fun.
A professional makes it his profession. . .

I think it depends on what it is.
I would rather be paid 20 mil a season now to play pro hoops, than the rare pick up game I get now lol thats for sure.

Considering the way the NHL lockout went, I'd rather play amateur and be a pro at some other job. If I'm going to be playing a sport, I wanna play it for the sport, and not to gain cash or to win at all costs.

We had a situation back in Pee-Wee where I first started with a team with a coach who'd push us to no end (to the point where he screamed at team members) I asked for a transfer, which went smoothly (thankfully, I got transferred into a team coached by a friend's father, who happened to be a great guy.) But the next year, shit started again. The team's coach was a father of two kids in this same team. That sort of thing was usual, but the clique formed quickly: the first kid became captain, the other kid and their two best friends became assistant. The two kids got more than twice the ice time of other team members, and weaker members (such as I, who had recently shifted to wingman after having passed many years in defence) were picked on constantly. Later on, one of the assistants got ill and had to quit the team. Who gets elected new assistant? Another friend of the kids. Why? Because he's "smart, always there, and gives it all he's got." Nice going, especially when said guy is a fat lazy slob who happened to break the shoulderblade of an opponent player during the last game without any second thought (they cheered the event back in the locker room.) The coach never said a word about it for one simple reason: his team was winning games.

I definately prefer the life of an amatuer. In my mind amateurs do things for the love of the game. Just look at how football, baseball and other pro sports go? It's all about money now.

Amateur for me!

I knew -that- *thwack*
I meant in terms of the question.

I consider an Amateur like a rookie and a Professional as experienced in something. I was wondering if he meant that or if he meant being paid for it.

i think "professional" connotes getting paid for it

with that in mind, i'd rather be an amateur with sports/music/whatever the thing is. inevitably, in my opinion, if you get paid for something you begin to focus more on the money than on the love for whatever it is you're doing. on the other hand, if someone waved a 10 million dollar contract in front of my face, i'd probably sell myself out in a second. i'm so weak Wink

I think a professional has their up points too. I mean look at all the stars we have in professional rock entertainment. Blink 182, Ben Folds Five, Jimmy Eat World, whoever - everyone starts out doing it for the music or for the love of the game. I dont think that it fades away so easily; but like silverorb said I bet it can become obscured. I find it inspiring that someone can get paid ridicuously large amount of money to do something that they simply enjoy doing.

There was a stand-up comedian who once said (quoted loosely) the following lines:

Quote:
"Have you noticed that rockstars can write just one song and then live their life on it? You know, stuff like Stairway to Heaven and all that? And I'm thinking, what if I could do the same as rockstars, you know? Get intelletual property on my jokes. I could trademark the joke of Pete & Repeat! In French: Pète et Répète! In Spanish: Peto y Repetante! You know what? Let's do it. Situation. You have all come here to hear jokes... that you've already heard. I'll be coming in like a shadow, you guys scream and whistle and do devil signs. Do it! Yeah, like this! And when you see my face, you will go nuts. You will scream, you will caress yourselves-- kidding! And when I say your city's name, you will go totally NUTS. You there! You jump down! You guys down there, you don't even catch him. Get the idea everybody? Let's do this!"

After his "rockstar-stand-up-comic act" thing, he got a standing ovation. But the message is still clear: some people can get paid ridiculous amounts of money for a particular thing. In hockey, when the lockdown happened, the fans completely blasted the players and accused them of being spoiled crybabies. That's when we saw the big black line between amateur and professional: the amateurs went to play in Europe, the pros stayed in America and tried to haggle for a salary.

Amatuer, definitely. Most have more passion for what they do than the pros do, though some pros really do love what they do and just happen to be getting paid big bucks to do what they love. I give those people serious props because they don't let the money go to their head. Mr. Green

But it really bugs me that everything is about money now. Sports, music, writing, you name it. What ever happened to just liking something and doing it because you like it? Goddess knows if I only did things because of money, I wouldn't ever raise rabbits! Darn things cost more to raise and show than you get get by selling offspring, but I love them so I have them anyway. And writing. I love to write. I'd love to get published, but it's the recognition as a writer that I'd want more than the money. Just to know people enjoy reading what I wrote. Smile
