I'm going to buy a new computer...I am having a friend build me one. He sent me some specs for computers that he can build...I have on I am leaning toward...but I just want your opinion.

One I am thinking:
CPU - AMD Athlon64 3000+
Ram - 512 MB PC3200 DDR
VC - Sapphire ATi Radeon 9600 Pro
HD - 120 GB Serial ATA
Power Supply - 430 Watt

What I will use it for:
I am going to ask for more Ram though. He said I can customize it more...that's why I am asking. I mainly use it for graphics. Drawing, coloring, CGing, working with photoshop and when I get the computer I will get Painter. I also have a load of music I wanna slam onto it, but otherwise I am not interested into video editing or anything. Possibly flash or animation programs in the near future but nothing like Final Cut Pro. Only game I might run...Sims/Sims 2 or Myst, Riven, Zork that type of deal. That's it. My problem is I like to run EVERYTHING at once. My compy now doesn't appreciate that.

For your needs, that looks like a pretty good setup. As you said though, get at least 1GB of RAM if you're going to be multitasking and working with photoshop and such. Actually 2GB of RAM might be more appropriate, and the prices are coming down. For a non-gaming setup you could even go with an Socket 754 Athlon 64 3000 and motherboard. That would save you a little money versus buying a Socket 939.

I highly suggest you upgrade to at least 1 GB of RAM - and if you'll be dealing with large pictures, 2 GBs wouldn't hurt, especially when it comes to animation and what's related to it. You have to take into account that there will be other programs running at the same time, and as months go on, newer programs take up more computer resources as they are fitted with new features and gizmos. The rest of the setup sounds all right and potent enough to do what it's been built for.

I would also suggest a better video card as the 9600 is quite dated.

If it's PCI-E, Nvidia is releasing a new mid range card... the 6800 GS. it will retail at $249 or less. You may want to check that out.

I suggest going with the Gig of ram, and if you plan to upgrade in the future go 939 for when the AMD dual core CPUs go down in price as well as go for the NVidia PCI-E card Shino suggested.
