Last month, I received a notice that one of my old college professors was going to retire. There was a nice reception planned with a dinner and a roast...the whole deal. It sounded great and I wanted to go...except you had to buy a ticket to go, for $60!
You can imagine my response..."Hell no"! This guy wasn't one of my favorite teachers...and I just think its rude to charge ppl to go. A little common sense here...how many college students have $60 bucks just sitting there to donate to the department to go to this?!
Sure, I'm an alum but still $60 is not cheap. And it was open to everyone.
But this is the sad/ironic part to it...
2 weeks after his retirement party he was rushed to the hospital where he died from complications of Prostate Cancer...which they thought he'd been cleared from.
Its just really sad that he died, and even more so that it happened right after he retired. Of all the timing for him. There was one thing about his obituary that did make me twitch though, in lue of flowers or condolences, the family wants ppl to donate to the school department! |

It is sad that your former teacher has passed on. Especially from Cancer. I can't stand hearing things like this.
As for them charge that much...
That's how much it was to get into my 10 year High School Reunion.
Needless to say, I didn't go. |

Sad thing is, for you to recieve the best possible educatin these days, you need to be using the best possible technology to aid you, this stuff doesnt come cheap and the only way the money can be raised is for the students to be charged for what you think would be just any old event.
I remember my school trying to charge £9 ($18 roughly) for a fancy dress costume day to raise money for a new IT room. |

Well, its one thing to raise money for something specific. Its a little different when it just goes to the department...nothing specific.
I don't know what they're trying to get money for. They've never done this sort of thing before which is what strikes me as odd.
I mean, Is my money going towards updating the writing lab or paying the Student Assistant who babysits it?
I've also noticed that they never tell you specificly how to send money to the department...I would personally think that if they want the money badly enough, they'd give you all the info right then and there to make it as easy as possible...but that applies logic and convenience. |

I'm sorry to hear that your professor passed away to cancer. But honestly, it doesn't surprise me that they wanted to charge you to come to his retirement. I've been out of school for a year, and I'm already getting bulletins asking me, as an alumni, to donate money. Why? So you can give it to football players as scholarship so that they don't have to pay to go to school? Thta's BS. When I no longer owe $90k for student loans because I wasn't good enough to get scholarships, then maybe I'll consider giving back to the school that gave me so little in comparison to lazy-ass athletes who sat on their ass for 4 years.
Sorry to rant. Just that schools asking for money really angers me. |

I hear ya Ming.
The only incentive they offer for giving money is your name gets printed in a newsletter...golly gee!
They at least let you pick where your money goes.
It just irks me that as an Alum, I can't use the health facility w/o paying a huge wad o cash...and that doesn't even guarantee you can use the pool when you want to. |
