March 13, 2007 - Gerard Butler has been looking for a hit in Hollywood for years, and he finally got it this past weekend with the hugely successful debut of 300. And now it looks like he may be appearing in another potentially big genre film: a remake of John Carpenter's classic Escape from New York.
Variety is reporting that Butler is "at the center of a package that CAA began shopping Monday" for a redo of the 1981 sci-fi action flick that originally starred Kurt Russell as the one and only Snake Plissken. Obviously Butler would take on that role, one of the great antiheroes of the movies, in the remake.
Neal Moritz is attached as producer and Black Hawk Down writer Ken Nolan is scripting. Variety also reports that "several studios" are fighting over landing the pic, largely because of Butler's new star power. Couldn't they see that star power coming like six months ago as the rest of us did? |

Why would they remake a movie that came out in 1981? Shouldn't they wait like another 10 years or so before they do that?

In defense The Dark Knight is not a remake of Batman. It's a retelling of a story. A continuation if you will.
They shouldn't do this. As much as I love Gerard Butler. This should not happen. |

That's not true. Shrek 2 was just as good as, if not better than, the first one. Jurassic Park 3 was probably nearly as good as the first one. Batman Begins was better than any of the other Batman movies. PotC 2 was nearly as good as the first one, and I have high hopes for the third. Lord of the Rings 2 was easily better than the first one, and the third was even better than that. Star Wars Ep 1 was, in my opinion, better than all three of the first movies (please don't jump down my throat, you won't convince me and I won't convince you) though admittedly ep 2 and 3 were pretty awful except where Padme kicked arse in 2.
They -can- make good sequels. They just don't always manage it. |
