Well, at least they come out and admit there's an issue.

Red Octane Confirms Two Defective Guitar Models
Something's funny with the hardware on select 360 guitars.

There's something wrong with those sweet Xbox 360 guitars. Harmonix isn't saying what that something is exactly, but it's not good news if you happen to be one of the unlucky ones who purchased an Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero 2 with guitar model numbers 95065 or 95055 on the back.

According to Red Octane, only those those two model numbers (95065 and 95055) are defective, so if you're sitting next to your guitar right now, turn it over and have a look. Be careful though -- recent versions of Guitar Hero may have another model number sticker pasted on the back of the box itself and not every sticker on the outside matches the guitar inside (for example the guys over at Xbox 360 Fanboy had a box with 95067 on the label and a model 95055 guitar inside). Check carefully.

Joystiq has been on this story for a couple of days now and they've been able to get some feedback and emails from the guys over at Red Octane. Recent emails have been concluded with the following statement:

"We really appreciate you bringing this to our attention. We are aware of the issue and are devoting a lot of resources to investigating and solving it. At present, we believe this may stem from a feature put in place to ensure accurate scoring. Resolving this is as important to us as it is to you and we are working hard to fix it. Check back early next week as we hope to have more information for you on how this will be resolved. Or, we can automatically update by email if you have subscribed to our knowledge based page for this issue. We are very sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused."

At present, there aren't a lot of options for those of you stuck with a wonky axe. Red Octane is recommending that customers who purchased one of the 95055 or 95065 guitars from a retail outlet return it to its original seller for an exchange. Those of you who bought online directly from Red Octane can fill out a warranty claim here.

In addition, Red Octane has the following statement posted up on their website right now:

"We have been informed of a possible calibration issue with Guitar Hero II for the Xbox 360's whammy bar. We believe this may stem from a feature put in place to ensure accurate scoring. Guitar Hero II features a complex control scheme that requires precise calibration between the game and the guitar. We are currently investigating the situation further; however, if you are experiencing these issues, we recommend that you try the following steps:

1. Turn off the power to your game console
2. Make sure the whammy bar is moved away from the body of the guitar and not depressed
3. Make sure the guitar is securely connected to your console
4. Then turn the console's power back on
5. Load the Guitar Hero II game and begin playing"

Along with that advisory is a phone number (310-255-2050) that you can call for direct customer support, along with a link to Activision's main support page. Stay tuned for more sad tales (and hopefully some ultimate clarification) from the Land of Rock.

Red Octane has been loyal to their customers, I never doubted they'd let this go without a resolution. Now if Microsoft would give them access to their wireless codes it be all good in the hood yo.

I do dig the explorer body style that the x box has...so much that i got the Nyko version for the PS2...which RAWKS!

Paint job coming soon.

Good, quick response and an assurance that things are being done. Red Octane's winning points just by being honest about the issue.

TEH PATCH!

Guitar Hero 2 Patch Fixes Whammy Bar
Patch enhances rockin', but some issues reported.

Didn't take the time to fix your broken guitar controller yourself? Yeah, me neither. No worries, though, Red Octane has got our backs. According to a post on the Guitar Hero forums (thanky thanky, Joystiq), a patch for Guitar Hero 2 has been released this weekend that should address problems folks have been having with whammy bar sensitivity.

As someone who suffered from whammy bar malfunction, I can confirm that the patch seems to have fixed most of the issues. The game is now registering whammy bar movement immediately. Hopefully, that's the case with all the defective guitars.

Of course, as legendary '80s rockers Poison taught us, every rose has its thorn. In this case the prickling issue is some people reporting the patch is causing lock-ups and general irritability to their 360s. It's unclear on how widespread this problem is (or if it is even Guitar Hero-related), but we'll keep you updated if more news walks this way.
