I've recently rediscovered my love for fairytales..and the more I look at them, the more I realize I simply can -not- choose a favourite.

So, I thought I'd ask-- which are your favourite tales? Mythology occasionally falls into this category as well-- Cupid and Psyche, for instance, is a very fairytale-esque story.

My favourites tend to depend on the depiction of the character in what I'm reading. For instance, I absolutely adore Cinderella in the Fables series, but not so much everywhere else. Snow White I love in Fables and in Fairest, but sometimes not so much in her more traditional tellings.

Beauty and the Beast I tend to love no matter what, the same with Cupid and Psyche, Allerleirauh, and East of the Sun and West of the Moon.

I -adore- Puss in Boots, particularly from Shrek, but also in his traditional form.

And Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty) I like some concepts of, though I've yet to find a specific instance of her in story that I really get into.

Oh, WHOA. I love fairy tales. XD And Puss'n'Boots from Shrek (but I think that's really because of Antonio Banderez X)!

My list of favorite fairy tales/legends/mythology (with links to the stories, where I could find them):

The Little Mermaid (original Danish, not Disney version)
Tsuru no Ongaeshi (aka "The Grateful Crane," or "The Crane Wife")
the legend of Arjuna, from the Mahabharata
Pan (from the Homeric Hymns)
the ballads of Robin Goodfellow
Eros and Psyche

Mythology!! Fairy Tales!!

Ok...it's hard to choose favorites. I'll list random ones.

The Water-Mother of Finnish Tales.
Any interactions between Loki and Thor.
The Goddess Leto.
Isis and Osiris
The Twelve Apostles

What should also be noted are mythologies created by authors!

The creation of Terre d'Ange and the story of Elua's travels. (Jacqueline Carey)
Gene Wolfe's creations...Especially in the Book of the New Sun.

Are those created by authors to explain new worlds any different than those created by civilizations?

I like stories of Tir Nan Og (or however you choose to spell it, given the plethora of variations) as well. <3 And 99% of mythology.

I suppose Journey to the West also comes into the Fairytale range, as it's certainly not mythology, though possibly Legend. And I adore Arthurian Legend of all kinds (though I hate Guinevere.)

I've been wanting to get into Asian mythology for awhile, like Outlaws of the Marsh (which is what Suikoden is based on)

I loved journey to the west...though I read the shorter abridged verion because it sooooo long....but my dad has both versions and I plan on reading the compelete story/legend/etc someday.

Hmm...I like a lot fo the Japanese fairytales but I don't really know thier names. They make kids books out of the most famous and popular ones all the time (for instance momotaro, or peach boy). I don't know what the english name of my favorite would be.

Sleeping Beauty is always great, but you gotta love The Seven Swans. Fabulous Irish fairytale.
All Greek Mythology (I'm somewhat of a Greek Mythology Addict)
Most Native American Mythology is also really cool, like Corn Mother, etc.

The dark Fairy Tales are good ones to know. Many of my favorite ones come from Greece, and involve Nohbdy, Labyrinths and minotaurs, and such. The Tales of One Thousand Nights and One Night, as well as the stories of Sinbad are also excellent.

In the modern day, though, I think my favorite fairy tales are the fractured ones.

By the way...Pan's Labyrinth is out on DVD. If you haven't seen it yet, buy or rent it. Especially if you like fairy tales.
