Holy shyte, thats exciting. I'll keep you guys in my thoughts. Have a kick ass show tonight. Sad I'm not closer or I would offer to come with my cameras, but I doubt I would be allowed to anyways. Knock em dead, and let us know how it goes when you get over your hang overs and exhaustion tomorrow sometime. |

But the show was AMAZING!!! Details later. Love you guys.
FUN FACT: Sully, the singer for Godsmack was once the drummer for 'Frankie Goes To Hollywood' |

From what I saw at the last Godsmack show I saw, he's a pretty sick drummer. |

Hey Shado-- I just heard on the radio that 92.9 Dave FM is doing some sort of competition for local bands to open for The Police or something. I'll try to find more details, but I wasn't sure if you'd already heard about it/investigated it, etc, so I figured I'd let ya know. <3 |

I've told a couple of you already but there was something more going on at that concert. I blogged about it on MySpace but I'm c&p-ing it here for you guys:
For those of you who own 'At The Edge Of Reason' track number 13, 'Greyfellow (48 hours and counting...)' probably haunts you in the same fashion it does me. The song was inspired by the last 48 hours of Sheldon Malone (my father-in-law)'s life and never fails to take me back to those moments. Watching someone that meant so much to my wife fade away like that left an imprint on me that will never leave. And for that I'm grateful.
He was a very amusing person. He laughed loudly and frequently. His entire life he had been around the theatre doing lighting, sound and acting himself. Because it was so evident that he was an actor for the sake of acting alone it was something that rubbed off on my Melissa and eventually on me. He was my mentor in the realm of acting and they were both there to encourage me and help me through my first attempt at acting as Professor VanHelsing in Bram Stoker's Dracula. Together they formed Stage Fright Theatre Company and put the show on 3 separate times, all of which I was cast in. The first two I played VanHelsing and the last time I got to play Renfield. But all of this is just background to the real reason for this blog, so that being said we'll move forward to last tuesday night, May 15th.
Last tuesday night at the Fabulous Fox Theatre my band Code Atom was given the privilege of opening up a sold out house for Godsmack. That's just under 5,000 people. And while this in itself is an amazing accomplishment for ANY band much less for a local, unsigned act it was not the foremost thing in my head that night. One night, while talking about how Sheldon got a job ushering at the Fox Theatre just so he could see all the shows for free, my wife said "How I wish I could stand on that stage for just a moment." and she closed her eyes and went there in her head. I just sat there watching her and wishing that I could give that to her. This want to see her have that only increased after Sheldon succumbed to lung cancer in 2004, some 3 years after that discussion. But the second I got the call from Shane telling me that we were going to open the Godsmack show I knew that something (whatever IT is) 'out there' was listening. At the end of the night while the roadies were breaking down the Godsmack set, I took Melissa onto the stage and stepped back so she could have her moment. She cried and hugged me so hard that I almost cried (manly tear of pain, of course) as well. I did it. I was able to give her that and that moment will be a defining point of my life as well. Even if it ends tomorrow I've given back something to her in thanks for all she's done for me.
I love you Melissa Joy,
REY
We'll have the footage of the show done early next week.

Thanks for thinking of us shan, but I think we'll pass. Yes I heard rumors but I never thought it was a real contest. I wouldn't want to push our music on that crowd. But I would LOVE to be there. Too bad the tix are outrageous. |

Shino-san reminded me to show and tell!
The show was UN-*&^%ING-BELIEVABLE! We waited just off stage until the lights went out and then made our way out. Hammy walked up to the mic and yelled "What's up Atlanta?!" and the crowd screamed! 4,000 voices screaming out. That's when the scope of what we were doing hit me. I walked out in the darkness and the sound guy spotlighted me. It was a real good thing I could not see that crowd because I was shaking. I knew that there was a lot riding on this one. so we started with The Advocate. I started weak because of nerves but I came to life about 30 seconds in and the whole show it was like I was on auto-pilot. The response we got was so overwhelming (we found out later that we got 93 call to Project 961 either asking about us or saying that we rocked) that it sounded surreal. it sounded like it was a recording. like I was listening to a live recording of my favorite band. It slowly started sinking in... I was playing a SOLD OUT show at the fabulous FOX THEATER!!! VERY FEW signed acts get to play that venue, and I've NEVER heard of an unsigned act getting to. we were making local legend with every minute we spent on that stage and we made the most of it. It was dizzying with promise and precarious threat. It was the single biggest night of my life to date. so big, in fact, that it literally took several days to fully sink in. my internal filters slowly let the experience in and I shook a little more each time and soon perma-grin set in for a good 2-3 days afterward. I handled it pretty well though, all things considered. We got off the stage and unloaded. but I made my way to the merch stand I was stopped no less than 10 times by people wanting to know all about us. Who are you again? Where are you guys from? Are you signed? When are you playing next? and even Is your girlfriend here? Heh heh heh. i answered no she's at home but my wife's right over there. HA! we didn't have enough time to really be prepared for it but the show was amazing. Thank you all for being a part of this! If you were there to help us win the battle of the bands this show was a direct result of your presences. We love you guys.

Awesome Rey. I'm glad it went well.
Have you noticed any changes. More people hitting your Myspace and downloading songs? That kind of thing.
It's pretty cool that Project 9-6-1 got calls about you guys. That's pretty solid. You don't hear that much about local acts.
I'm proud of you and the rest of the guys. You've been busting your ass for a long time and you finally got a chance to play a big show. Maybe I should start calling Project 9-6-1 and saying, "hey... could you guys play that band that opened up for Godsmack at the Fox. Code Atom I think it is. They F'in rocked!" |

I'll tell you--You're pretty popular in my neck of the woods also...
I usually have my Code Atom CD in my CD player...and many people ask about you, and then tell me how much your music rocks.
And I totally agree.
But in light of that, I'm almost angry with myself.
I wish I would have read sooner...I actually won tickets to that Godsmack show off of 105.5 (the rock station) here in Alabama and gave them to a friend deciding that I didn't want to drive all the way to Atlanta just to drive back.
To have that moment again.
And you *are* a wonderful person.
But we all see that in you. Always.
And I'd love to get your music on the radio here as well, if you'd like that. |
