XD
This is awesome.
Someone ganked the laser out of a blu-ray drive and made an imitation Star Trek Phaser out of it!

HHAHAHAHAHA
And some of you said there was no reason to go Blu-ray! XD

Modder makes Blu-ray-powered Star Trek phaser

With a new Star Trek film coming out, diehard fans of the series will need to brush up on their Klingon and start thinking about the costumes they'll wear for opening night. Should some of those fans settle on a member of the Enterprise, they might be interested in replicating the far-flung technology of tomorrow with the help of Sony's console of today.

KipKay, a site with a host of videos showing users how to do everything from improving gas mileage with acetone to quickly chilling a can of warm soda, has posted a video detailing how to use a Blu-ray laser assembly from the PlayStation 3 to create a convincing Star Trek phaser for under $100. Using a laser assembly and a toy replica phaser both purchased off eBay for a total of $75, a dremel tool, a soldering iron, and other handy tools, the video shows how a user can replace the toy's existing lightbulb with a Blu-ray diode.

The process is involved enough that only especially dedicated Trekkies will be willing to invest in the money, time, and effort to own a Blu-ray laser phaser, but the end result is pretty cool. Relatively speaking.

It's not that I don't want Blu-Ray. It's that I want the war to finish! Sad

The only thing I'm waiting for is for one of the technologies to win over the others, so that I can finally get myself the corresponding burner without shelling out olympic amounts of cash and thus diminish the space taken by my Anime backups to about a quarter of its current side (About 5 ft tall right now in thin cases)

I'm on board with Blu-Ray b/c... well... I bought a PS3 anyway. And it's just all around the superior format.

But that wasn't the point of this topic... the point of this topic was the Phaser! Mr. Green

Wouldn't making this phaser eff up your Blu-Ray making it, useless? At the least, it voids the warranty! lol

You would have to be a really DIE HARD fan to do this.
