Well, not sure where to post these, but I've got a few student friendly/bachelor friendly/cheap/easy recipes that I feel like posting here.
So, here's one.
Really Stupid Easy Pasta (Vegetarian/Vegan) (About 10 mins prep time)
Ingredients:
Whatever brand pasta you have.
Salsa (any fairly chunky brand)
Canned tomato paste
Water
Spices (I like Oregano and Summer Savory, you can also use Cumin and Curry powder, which can be nice with a TINY bit of ginger.)
Maple Syrup (Optional)
Nutritional Yeast/TVP/Whathaveyou (Optional, not much point in using nutritional yeast if your going to use cheese.)
Olive Oil
Parm. Cheese, if you swing that way.
Equipment
2 Pots (One will only have pasta/water in it)
Stove
Strainer
Spoon
Fork.
Sauce:
Ok, so, basically you want to make enough sauce that you're a little higher in the pot than the noodles are. 2:1 or 4:1 are great tomato sauce to salsa ratios. I generally cook the sauce just under medium.
Put yer tomato sauce in the a pot, add water until you've got the consistency you want, stirring a lot. Throw in some salsa to give it a texture and extra veggie bits, as well as your spices. Once the heat's on, and it's cooking, throw in some maple syrup if you like sweet sauce, and some olive oil, which seems to mysterious improve the sauce, while that's cooking, make yer pasta.
Put the Pasta in a little more water than you need to cover it, and set it to boil, don't actually let it boil to much, though, though it's not a tragedy if it does. It should take around six minutes to cook. Maybe more, maybe less, the best way to check is with your fork and your teeth. A little olive oil in the water, well mixed, can make yer life easier. Maybe some salt, too.
I like to mix the sauce and pasta with the same fork/spoon/knife/whatever, as I think it imparts a little sauciness to the pasta. Make sure to stir both the sauce and pasta often.
Ok, once things are nearing readiness is a good time to throw in yer TVP, nutritional yeast, or cheese, mixing it into the sauce. My sauce tends to be quite thick, but I don't strain the pasta super long, so it works out.
Once everything's ready, stick yer strainer in the sink and pour yer pasta through it, let it sit a second, and dump that in with the sauce, giving it a good mix.
Serve it in a big bowl with lots of forks for sharing. |

Salsa...Now thats a pretty cool idea. You could actually do a lot of things with salsa. This is giving me some ideas brewing.
With the pop-up of Recipes around here, we should just about have a general thread for all these so we can keep up and swap stories.
Here's a note of chemistry: Vinegar + Cayenne + Tomato = BBQ
Made that sort of thing by accident while following the internet on how to save a burned pot o veggie spagetti sauce. |
