He awoke in a cold sweat, going from flat on his back to sitting bolt upright with apparently nothing in between. Something was wrong. Terribly, terribly wrong. Suddenly, he knew. Falling off the bed in his hurry, he knelt, clasped his hands, and began to pray.
He prayed
please...
With a fervor that is felt only by a select few.
He prayed
Oh dear Jesus...
Because, knowing what she had done, he could think of nothing else to do.
He prayed
I'll do anything, be anything you want...
out of futility.
He prayed
Please...
for his own sake.
Because he knew
Just don't let her die...
that, with a life as hard as his had been, he would cease to live without her...
He hitched a ride down to the hospital(he knew which one, though he didn't know how) as soon as the first rays of dawn crept over the horizon. Drivers were plentiful for some reason, and he was able to make the trip nearly for free, but he didn't care. He walked into the hospital and opened his mouth, but the secretary told him the room before he could speak. He spared her a smile of the deepest gratitude and made his way, breaking into a run halfway there. He opened the door quietly and tiptoed in to find her looking at him, with love filling her eyes. Her wrists were covered in bandages, now bright red. He rushed to the bedside and she pulled him into her arms as he broke down and wept, managing only to say "Thank God" before he was engulfed in sobs. Slowly he calmed, and as the tension eased out of him, she whispered in his ear.
"I was so frightened.
But they heard your voice,
and sent me back."
