It's called the Fame System. Basically, your Character meets certain requirements, (that are rare and somewhat a mystery) and npc's start mentioning YOUR character in convos! Imagine, having someone who's like, 2nd lvl actaully SEE you and be in awe, because an NPC of importance mentioned you. That would be an excellent addition to FFIX IMHO, as well as a way to propel PvP when it gets released! Anyway, I'm not going to be playing again until the 20th.

There's already fame in the game, but it's player-central. The ammount of quests and such you do in a certain country will raise your fame and allow you to do more advanced quests and get discounts on items in NPC shops etc.

The reason universal fame wouldn't work is because of the style of the game and how the story works. Everything is centered around your player, regardless of how many people have done the same thing. When you do a mission, you're doing it for the first time. When you save the world, you're saving the world. Not anyone in your party, not anyone that did that mission a year ago. If suddenly other people became more important than you, then the game loses its solidarity in the fact that you are the main character.

And to be honest, there is a real sort of fame. It's called player character-distributed fame as opposed to non-player character fame. If you become great in the game, people will know you. Especially with servers at low populations comparatively. There are quite a few celebreties on every server, Ragnarok included. Most everyone knows about Aeqking and his tendancies to shout out "GUNDAM WING!!!" in Jeuno every now and then in japanese. People know about Masterasia, the galka that always bazaars inside one of the galka NPCs in Jeuno. Most infamous are the Tuyu bros. (Four characters named Tuyu, Tuyuyu, Tuyuyuyu and Tuyuyuyuyu) which are often seen /following eachother arround bazaaring, or in pairs in different towns. A lot of people know myself and my friends, because we're nice high-level english speaking players that have knowledge and advice to give.

To me the sense of fame in reality is much greater than a systematic NPC-based thing. That's how I see it anyways.

You forgot to mention Aladdin, the taru who sits outside of the Windurst Woods Mog House, always Bazaaring...I think Ive not seen him there one time since I began playing lol.

Im not overly popular, but for a while I was well sought in Kahzam as being the best RedMage around because I always looked after everyone. I could take care of a group even if we didnt have a WHM, which was a nice feeling ^^ Ive got a list of about 40 people on my friend list who anytime they see me running around they shout for me and stop for a conversation ^^ its a nice feeling...even if it is a small group of people

I never seen or heard any of the people you mentioned. Hell, Ive seen Cobbi once when he helped me kill one worm in Qufim, Ive seen Sciler twice randomly walking around, Doot like 3 times, Shino just twice too and Chibi like once or twice as well. Hell I see Motts more than I see any of you. Used to hang out with Az all the time, but now that he left the server I barely speak with him.

I think fame is in the eye of the beholder in some case, like Lixx says she is known everywhere, but I havent seen anyone who knows her, so... But I do have my own group who knows me, so in my mind I am famous.

Sorry, let me correct myself. Everyone I know or have played with during the time I imported knows of these people. Not everyone will, because not everyone has spent as much time playing the game yet. I know you've just arrived in Jeuno, which is where most of these people are located most of the time; it's the central hanging out spot for most higher levels, which these people are. Myself and friends have spent 50-80 levels depending on how many jobs we've leveled there, waiting and hanging out in Jeuno, which is probably why we know about 'em. Give it time, and you'll certainly know the community as well.

(And Sci didn't say she was known everywhere. Read again ;3)
