Wow... that's pretty bad!
Even if it is a way to stop modding... that's pretty sh1tty of them to do either way.

Source: Posts on message boards like the official Xbox forums and Team Xecuter, followed up on by articles at mod-savvy sites like Xbox Scene.
The official story: A Microsoft rep said the company had no comment at this time.
What we heard: Microsoft released its Fall System Update for the Xbox 360 today and Internet forums were quickly buzzing with reports that the update had "bricked" users' consoles, rendering them unable to play games or even boot up normally.
While Microsoft is staying mum on the subject, the bulk of speculation is that the Fall Update is intended to brick Xbox 360s that have been modded. However, some posters are reporting problems with unmodded consoles being bricked, and forum-goers at Xbox Scene are saying that the update is not consistently bricking modded consoles.
Furthermore, Team Xecuter is reporting that bricked consoles can still be repaired relatively painlessly, and that Microsoft isn't banning GamerTags or specific systems from Xbox Live, something that would seem a distinct possibility if the company wanted to come down hard on modders.
So what's the deal here? If Microsoft intended to brick modded consoles, it didn't do a very thorough job of it (perhaps a warning shot to make people think twice about modding systems?). If it's an unexpected bug with the Fall Update, it seems convenient that it's happening primarily to modded systems.
Still, the few reports of the Fall Update bricking unmodded systems are troubling. While fixing the system might be an easy thing for people who cracked their systems open in the first place to mod them, it's still not something the average gamer is bound to be capable of doing.
Whether intentional or not, it seems the Fall Update is turning some Xbox 360s into paperweights. But with varying reports about who it's happening to and why, and Microsoft not explaining what's going on, there's no sure way to say which 360s will be affected by the problem.
Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus.

And it's being fixed...

Citing problems in "less than one percent" of consoles, company is updating update; patch ready in 24 hours.

This week's Fall System Update for Xbox 360s went very smoothly...for 99 percent of console owners. For the remaining one percent, the past day has been nothing but a next-gen nightmare.
The update, which was released yesterday, added several new features to the Xbox 360's dashboard and the console itself, including 1080p resolution support. But for some Xbox 360 owners, it simply turned their consoles into a $400 paperweight.
Many among the Xbox modding scene believed the update crashed supped-up Xbox 360s and was a message from Microsoft to modders to stop tinkering with the hardware. Microsoft weren't exactly forthcoming about the problem, but today the company broke its silence.
"A small percentage of consoles were affected negatively by the fall update (less than one percent have reported issues). We're working with those affected to get them back up and running, whether that be by providing another console or fixing their existing console. We're committed to resolving this issue."
Microsoft expects to have the problem solved within the next 12 to 24 hours, according to Microsoft's marketing team's Gamerscore Blog. Microsoft urges anyone in North America encountering problems with the update to call technical support at 1-800-4-MY-XBOX. |

I've had mine for a little over a year with no problems... until I tried to watch the old Transformers movie on it. |

It just won't play the movie. I dunno exactly what's going on with it, so far this is the only movie it's done this with. |

Actually, I'm a believer that the biggest mistakes made at Microsoft had nothing to do with Bill Gates. You don't take a company from your garage to practically running a nation by making stupid decisions. |

:/ I'm a believer that even with Micro-Management, the company is still Gates'. Thus, problems with his product come from the production which comes from the producers which comes from many levels of management which comes from... Gates.
So in a Butterfly Effect of sorts, Gates is to blame. He hired the people who hired the people who hired the people (etc etc) who messed this up. And being at the top of the chain, he should take some responsibility. |
