Nintendo Launches Wii Forecast Channel; Opera Browser Coming Soon

Want to know the weather in Tokyo? How about Madrid or London? Just turn on your Wii console and check out the Forecast Channel, which launched today. Nintendo also announced that the Internet Channel is scheduled to go live at the end of the week.

Wii owners were greeted this morning with a small system update that enabled the Wii Forecast Channel on the console. Moving around a 3-D globe, Wii users will be able to check weather forecasts (provided by Weathernews) for anywhere in the world.

Ever since the console's launch, users have not been able to engage the Forecast, News, or Internet Wii Channels, but in addition to the Forecast Channel, Nintendo is also about to release a free trial edition of the Opera Browser, thereby enabling the Internet Channel. Starting December 22, Wii owners with a broadband Internet connection can download the free version of the Opera browser.

This trial version is a beta of sorts, as the final version of the browser will be available at the end of March 2007, and will be free for all Wii owners to download through the end of June. After that, the browser will be sold for 500 Wii Points through the Wii Shop Channel.

Nintendo claims that with the Opera browser, "the Internet Channel provides an optimal Web browsing experience on people's home television." The browser (including the trial version) is Adobe Flash-enabled, which should make a difference when surfing many sites. With the Wii remote, users simply point and click; they can also zoom in or out on the screen. For typing, an on-screen keyboard is used.

"Our software brings the power and reach of the Internet to the hottest video game system available," said Scott Hedrick, Executive Vice President, Devices at Opera Software. "Wii's unique interface adds a new dimension to our browser, making it a useful tool that the whole family will enjoy operating with ease."

Once the Internet Channel launches this week, of the remaining channels Nintendo now simply needs to get the News Channel up and running. That's expected to happen early on in Q1. Nintendo has also hinted that it will slowly add other types of channels to the Wii console, but nothing concrete has been announced just yet.

The Opera Browser is not the full version from what I've read. The full version of the browser will only be available via 500 Wii points. As stated in the article.

Yeah the Opera Beta launches this week, the full version comes out March BUT it will be free until June. After June it will be 500 points. At least that's what I gathered from the article. Either way, wootness! Now all we need is the News Very Happy

I wonder what's going to be available on the Internet channel, unless Nintendo plans on releasing a keyboard attachment along with the Wiimote's mouse-like capabilities.

Standard USB keyboard could work if they let it. Smile

That would be the wisest option. We'll see whether that actually happens or not.

And Madden uses it.

Madden Wii Uses the Forecast Channel
Snow in your region, snow in your games.

One of the first questions that came up when Nintendo launched their Forecast Channel yesterday was the implications it could have for in-game activity. Randomized weather a common feature nowadays, but what if the game could pull its weather data from where you live? Or, conversely, if you'd like to see some weather from another region, simply claim you're from there.

Seems Madden NFL 07 for Wii already does this. A Nintendo message board user stumbled across the hidden feature yesterday evening, though some are claiming it's doesn't work 100%, so perhaps there's more going on than it appears.

Either way, it's an interesting feature that comes with some questions: what happens if your region rains or snows all the time? Those environmental hazards would become pretty boring, and should you really have to force your Wii to check the weather for another region simply for change? Hopefully studios realize this is a neat option, not a requirement.

How stupid can you be? We're talking about a 16+ game football season...what area is gonna rain or snow all the time? It might have made more sense had the comment considered "What happens if your region has NO rain or snow (like crapass El Paso, Texas)? Even Antarctica has one snowless day a year. I'm assuming that when you play, the game sets the weather like it would be wherever the game is being played. Well Madden's been doing this for years. If you play a Season mode or Franchise Mode game, it will be cold in New York in January and hot in Dallas in August. Would you want to play a season where your Florida team hosts a Conference playoff game in 15-below weather? How about a 92 degree Game 16 in Green Bay? Yeah, that's what I want!
The writer of this article is a complete idiot. I'm also pretty certain you can manually set weather during exhibition games like you always have been able to. This sounds like some hack writer who caught a paragraph off of the forums and turned it into a story. It was actually newsworthy (simply for it being reported) until the last paragraph. I have to actually give EA credit for adding this feature BEFORE the channel was up and running. It hurts to give them credit for anything but this is actually good programming.

No reflection on their readers but this is another reason I don't rely on 1Up.com much.

I see their point though, to an extent. In reality though, the game should go by the weather in the area of the home statdium.

So even though I'm in Atlanta, if it's snowing in Denver and I play in Denver, it should be snowing in the game.

That would be cool.
