When games start showing up in retail databases, we're usually pretty close to an official unveiling. Typically, the entry will disappear from said retailer at the request of the publisher, but the "damage" is already done -- people know it's coming. In this case, it's the long-rumored Guitar Hero 80s Edition, originally mentioned in EGM.
GameStop and EB Games have a listing for a "Guitar Hero 2 Rocks the 80's Expansion Pack," priced at $39.99 and aiming for a July 17 drop date. We're suspect to believe any release date issued by a retailer, but the reduced price makes sense, as we don't expect Red Octane will be introducing any major feature updates here, just new songs.
Will Red Octane make these songs available for Xbox 360 owners via Xbox Live? So far, Microsoft isn't allowing companies to distribute expansion packs as standalone releases, leaving XBL the only option. |

Activision rep was in the store today and gave me a page listing it for May with Guitar Hero 3 coming out in November; but we'll see. |

Electronic Gaming Monthly suggested Guitar Hero: 80s Edition earlier this year, but it has taken months for Activision to come around and confirm the thing. Still, today it's official, with a press release announcing a Guitar Hero: Rock the 80s expansion pack arriving this summer for PlayStation 2.
Other than the obvious new venues and characters, new songs are in order, and Activision has teased these so far:
# Twisted Sister -- I Wanna Rock
# Flock of Seagulls -- I Ran
# Ratt -- Round and Round
# Bow Wow Wow -- I Want Candy
# Quiet Riot -- Metal Health
# Dio -- Holy Diver
# Asia -- Heat Of The Moment
The final version will include at least 30 tracks, so don't worry if a personal favorite is missing -- there's plenty more 80s to go around. |

I wish they had gone with "We're Not Gonna Take It" for Twisted Sister, but any Dee Schneider is better than no Dee Schneider.

What a better way to end the day than to receive word on additional songs to be included in now-retitled Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s. Activision and Red Octane are likely to hold off the biggest names until closer to release, but we're happy to report that acts like Poison, The Police, Skid Row and Eddie Money are making an appearance. The full list:
