And now it is fact.
Original games coming over Wii's network

WiiWare: Original Downloadable Games for Wii
Completing the Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo 'indie game arcade' trifecta.
By Mark Whiting, 06/27/2007
Last night, Newsweek snagged a doozie of a scoop from the mouth of Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime himself over on his Level Up blog.

The news? WiiWare -- downloadable Wii-specific games (a la Xbox Live Arcade or PlayStation Network) to be sold over the Wii Shop channel for Wii Points.

"The vision for WiiWare started back during the development of the Wii itself. A couple of GDCs [Game Developers Conferences] ago, Mr. Iwata hinted at downloadable content; that we wanted to help young, promising developers overcome the limitations of small budgets and team sizes to bring their games to the Wii," he said. "WiiWare content is new content. It can come from Reggie's Videogame Garage or from EA."

Woot! So, here it comes ladies and gentlemen -- third party "arcade" style experiences, sold for a reasonable price, making particular use of that unique Wii controller. Additionally, while Nintendo will be the one that ultimately determines the price of the content, they will not screen it. Instead, that's up to the individual creator and their ability to remain within the ESRB guidelines. Other than that, it's fair game, according to Fils-Aime.

The initiative is particularly interesting because if fulfills Nintendo's current need for a tier of games that fall somewhere between the "poorly-executed generic port" and "multimillion next-gen budget" experience. In theory, the service could pick up the slack left by the current absence of "Triple A" development teams on the platform -- small teams, quick turnaround time, with a low barrier of entry. Much like the early stages of the DS, expect creativity and interesting uses for the control scheme to take center stage at first, hopefully germinating some interesting 'full length' game ideas in the process. A common complaint with the Wii's offering has always been that consumers shouldn't have to pay full-game price for (essentially) mini-games and control experiments -- now with WiiWare, they won't have to.

It's also good to see Nintendo taking a hands-off approach as far as playing gatekeeper over the whole thing goes. Left to their own devices the creativity of the individual studios will be the only barrier of entry in the marketplace. Much like XBLA and Playstation Network, WiiWare could easily developing into a fertile incubator where up-and-coming talent gets its first start. With the Wii increasing in popularity every day, there's certainly a big enough install base for the system to get off to a rousing start.

Nintendo has never taken a "hands off" approach to it's hardware or content so that is something I find hard to swallow. I am happy that they did this but I also think it's another example of hands ON considering Wiicade.com is already doing this and they probably just figured "if someone's gonna make money off of our console (Wiicade doesn't charge anything so far), then it should be us".

I do hope this catches on. If we can get some games like M.U.L.E. or Tunnel Runner out there, that'll be cool. Hopefully the creativity will take center stage over gimmick control and graphics.

The ultimate version of Bejeweled has already been released.

It's called Puzzle Quest. Wink

I think we'll see some interesting stuff out of this. Especially if you consider the fact that Wii Play should have been downloadable ... and probably free.

Well, the content delivery system's already in place with the Wii Shop. Was anyone really not expecting this to occur? Perhaps if someone figures out the protocols and packaging system, we can have Free Wii games downloadable.

I don't understand...How will the Wiimote and chuck translate to like Arcade fighting games or Neo-Geo games?

I guess if you wanna play centipede and Asteroids all day it's fine. I guess the Wiimote can be used in games like Operation Wolf, Terminator 2, and Revolution X. Razz
