Oh dang its, It's been so long since I've been here, that I need to talk to you guys about something that I truly adore. This something is delicious and fun, and can be done at a local McDonalds. That thing - Is Monopoly.
But why does someone like Monopoly? Sure, the game generally ends up in a fit of anger and frustration, as someone hurtles the gameboard across the room claiming that uncle jed has been taking property, or that the banker gave out the wrong change.
And all this, after roughly two-and-a-half hours of gameplay.
So please, tell me a monopoly game story. Don't worry, I'll start it off:
So my friends and I were playing Monopoly. I had about 1500 dollars left and feeling pretty good that I had nailed Park Place early. Park Place, that ghetto of the blue-spaces, was still a dark blue space nonetheless, so having it in my possession had led me to believe that I was going to take this game to the very end.
My best buddy rolls the die and lands on Boardwalk - the Grandaddy of Grandure, the Sultan of Spaces, the Pie of the Property Lines! Frustrated at his incredibly fast purchase of the golden property of Uncle Pennybags, I make a stand - I'm going to get that property no matter what it takes.
So my turn comes around, and I ask, nicely in fact, "Hey, would you possibly be willing to sell me Boardwalk?" He looks at me, his brow furrowed as he contemplates the request. I make an offer of some other property of mine, when he asks how much money I have.
"Fifteen-hundred dollars," I say.
"How about Nine-hundred?" He responds. My heard shatters - If I made that purchase, I would be putting myself into the red! How could he make such a bold offer? Does he think he can overturn my world and push my boundaries into the nil-void of space-and-time? Maybe this was a test: It required my abilities to talk him down from that price - maybe make an offer that he couldn't refuse, yet the game was still early and I had very little property, particularly nothing that he could have used.
I felt defeated when he refused every one of my offers, until finally, things started to take a different approach in my mind: Maybe this will work out. Maybe I can scrape the money together, get a few homes on the spaces, and really milk him for what it's worth!
With vigor and candor, I pull out the nine-hundred bucks in assorted play-money. I hand it to him and in return, I get that golden piece of property: The Blue Bonanza known as Boardwalk.
It wasn't until later that he ends up purchasing all of the Dark Purple and Teal spaces, gets a monopoly, hotels, etc. and bankrupts me in 2 more go-arounds. Figures.

Has anyone actually ever COMPLETED a game of Monopoly?
I mean we usually just give up after we've been playing for 3 hours or so. |

The only thing worse than playing Monopoly is being subjected to playing Monopoly in Spanish. Oh yes...back in high school, this was supposed to be a reward for good work. I found it more like punishment.
Despite that...no game of Spanish Monopoly was complete without someone secretly stealing money from the bank, which was never discovered until after the game, when we put the board away only to find the thief's secret stash hidden underneath.
Also, no game of Spanish Monopoly was complete without bribes of some kind, usually from the aforementioned bank robber. |

They have that new version of Monopoly where you keep track of points, and when you want to quit, you just add em up and there's your winner. Ingenius. =P |

The majority of people I have talked to hate Monopoly. Now, assuming that this is an adequate representation of the general population, I can't help but wonder why they still even make Monopoly... |

I play on Pogo. Games rarely go above an hour there. Two of the modes have a turn and networth limit (after which the game stops and the winner is announced by net worth) in addition to the official mode.
In real life, I see people are very, very reluctant to trade, and usually ask for a completely unreasonable amount of cash for their props, thus stalling the game. It's hard to get someone to "accept the challenge" and break the monopoly ice.
But then, what's with getting the dark blues? You know it's all about the purples and oranges. |

Dark Purples and teals...be a slum lord, and the game will be yours.
EDIT: I also find that a lot of people are always reluctant to mortgage. It's money! |
