Thanx for the info guys. Finally got to take a look at it. It seems as if when the page was edited, someone copied the code from a "view source" via the browser then edited that code, then uploaded it as home.php.
The pages use include files. These include files are added into the acutal page before being served to the browser so if you view source, you only see html code. Because of this, when the source was copied, the code that chooses the random character was not there. This is also why you only saw this problem on the home page.
This is just my theory.
