Soft pads will kill you, if you have hard pads, the game is bad ass. I worked at an arcade for a long time and still havea lot of connections there, so I get free games all the time, its fun to progress from 1---2---1---2 songs into the stepper beats like Cow Girl Double Heavy, Paranoia 190 Heavy, etc. It takes time, and a lot of looking stupid, but it is beyond hella fun. As for just ease of play, yeah its harder at first, but the reward of doing your first heavy song is beyond worth it.

Pads are harder. Especially the soft pads that slide around when you get into really quick-beat songs. A hard pad that stays put is your best friend in these sorts of instances. The controller is much easier. I have better rythm with pushing buttons than actually stepping to things.

yeah, Kajiru, it pretty much boils down to this: Gamers have better hand eye coordination than foot-eye cordination, so you're going to be better with a controller. However if you can't kepe up with songs, you should do fast songs with the controller and the songs you can handle practice with your feet. This will allow your eyes to get used to fast patterns and learn the arrows. Trust me this is like 1/3rd of Playing DDR. Know the arrows to the point where you can at least hit an average song with an A-B while watching the background animation. After I did that with Days Go By with Dirty Vegas, I knew where I stood, and it wasn't on light mode anymore.

first off...I DIDNT KNOW DIRTY VEGAS HAD DAYS GO BY!!!!

Second, the game is much easier with the control. I can easilly get an A ranking on MAX300 or MAXXUNLIMITED. The feet, though, just take practice. Like as of now, i can do Orion.78 on heavy with no problem, and i can do other catastrophics like that with ease...but it takes practice, and, Daijaga said before: It takes some making fun of.

That is all

Is there a hard mat you can buy or is your only option to stable a soft mat to a wood plank?

no, they do have hard mats that they do sell...though they are much more expensive. Some ranging up to and over 100 bucks. I would rather just tape the soft one to the concrete basement floor, and only spend 25 bucks in matt and duct tape Very Happy

That is all

There aer plans, I'm sure, somewhere on the net to make them if you get the proper materials from the arcades or something. But they'll be a bit expensive to buy. If you plan on being one of those uber-l33ts, you'll probably want to invest in it.
