http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/06/21/news_6101035.html

Makes a lot of sense mathematically but very little realistically. Even with the trend in electronics of releasing high and dropping drastically, this is extreme. Had Sony released this info I would think it's the "We'll say $500 then release at $400 and everyone will be happy" scheme but they are supposed to be independant analysists.

I'd predict a $350 launch (at most) and dropping to $299 in 6-8 months. I also wouldn't expect all of these features to be built into a single model. Differring price point models would make more sense to me.

We'll see

(Turns on Atari 2600)

Bah and double bah. "Analysts" begins with the word "Anal". These guys are only speculating and have only a hearsayical basis for that argument. And lets not remember that Sony is huge and can afford to take a small cut on the PS3 if they sell more then any other consol.

Keep in mind that the PS2 and Xbox had really stupid prices when they first came out. Now they're $150. If they expect people with lots of money to be excited for their systems, they'll try to milk as much as they can.

Electronics always come out exorbitantly high. You have to do that to acculmulate cash (make back cost) because nothing gets adopted until it reaches the Mass Market Price (whatever that is for each individual item). $200-250 is the beginning of an acceptable MMP for a home game system IMO so that's where you'd want to eventually hit. I believe the Saturn was $400 when it launched and that was near ten years ago.

I believe the PS3 CAN launch at that price and sell (see www.gamespot.com's survey at the bottom of their home page...20% of readers (4500) say'd they pay that price) so the idea would be to announce $500 and release it at $400. You'd sell four times as many. Then you drop it sowly in maybe $50 increments til you hit the MMP. Three-four years in you hit the $150 level. DVD players were $800 when they came out, not you have them BUILT INTO the $150 consoles and selling solo for under $50.

DAmmit Razer, quit making good points. You DO have one there, a point that is, but I just dont see them debuting over $400 if not to appeal to the christmas moms alone. In the grand scheme $500 really may not BE that much money, but it is a very intimidating number, its half a G, and thats some cash.

So I shouldn't mention my two other Platinum cards? One at $4000 and 9.5% and the other I think $2500 at 7.8% with a picture of Darth Vader on it?
