Two words: My God!
I managed to land preview screening tickets to this movie and I'd wager I'd be willing to shell out money over and over again to watch it again. When you go into this please realize that aside from the actors and the items they are holding, everything is bluescreen/greenscreen (or whichever color they chose). This is an amazing movie from start to finish. Wonderful pulp noir of the 1930/40's feel. If you are a fan of old Hollywood and its movies like I am this is certainly a movie for you. It takes classic Hollywood and creates this fantastic hybrid with digital technology that will leave you breathless. The acting was great and on key with typically pulpy fashion with the best bit of humor brushed on it as a wonderful accent.
"Set in, and seemingly made in, a semi-futuristic version of 1939, the only giveaway that the film is a modern production is its nearly seamless computer-generated effects. The film stock gloriously takes on the appearance of being grainy and sharply vivid all at once, while the monochromatic color scheme is only one shade away from full-blown black-and-white. As for the actors themselves, they are specifically shot in soft-focus, their lusciously romanticized, dreamlike images moodily lit like the screen idols and sirens of seventy years ago.
The world's most famous scientists are systematically disappearing one by one, and following an attack on Manhattan by an army of giant, mechanical robots, ambitious reporter Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow) decides it is time to investigate the culprit behind these phenomena. Enlisting the help of ace aviator and wiseguy ex-boyfriend Joe Sullivan (Jude Law), Polly and Joe set off on a voyage across the globe in search of the mysterious madman responsible, Dr. Totenkopf (Sir Laurence Olivier, in an ingenious posthumous performance). The stakes are further heightened when they must also save Joe's right-hand man Dex (Giovannni Ribisi), who is captured by the robots during an attack on their air base. As Polly and Joe bicker and trade sarcastic remarks as only destined lovers do, they discover that Totenkopf's goal is larger and more potentially disastrous than they could have possibly expected: he is planning to end the world. So it’s good huh? From the previews I thought it looked like crap on ice.
I might check it out on you're recommendation though.
One question though, in one preview he flew into the water and started flying around under water for the love of god. Now my aerial engineering may be a little rusty but I know that that can not work. |

And the giant flying aircraft carriers being held up by slow moving propellors didn't set your aerial engineering alarm off?
I was always taught to view every movie as if it took place in a different dimension, even movies like Seabiscuit and Saving Private Ryan, that way you really can't be disappointed/shocked by anything that may happen.
Which is why I love scifi movies so much, less pretending. |

Anywho, now i have to see this movie, if it has gotten the Doot two-thumbs-up sticker of recommendation. That, and ive slightly wanted to see this movie for a while now, what with it contiunally popping up in movie previews
But i did like Reaps description, as it was comical: Crap on Ice
Thats a new one |

Eh, I judge movies on the previews. If the preview sucks, the movie has to be somwhere near that vicinity. I'll stick to waiting for Shaun of the Dead if you don't mind me. |
