I just bought an ATI X850 Pro AGP card, and while I thought it was a killer card for the cost, I decided to exchange it for a BFG 6800GT OC card. I ran 3DMark 05 stock on both cards, the 6800GT outscored the X850 by about 200 points. The X850 overclocked by about 200mhz core/memory scored the same for me as the 6800.. and the 6800 is about $90 more expensive.
I'm kind of pissed, because I was expecting this 6800 to be nominally better. I don't feel like doing another exchange though, I'm just going to be happy with what I have and move on.
Next up, I'm grabbing a new Socket 939 motherboard and upgrading to an Athlon 64 3700. This one is the San Diego core with 1MB cache, and the motherboard supports DDR400 in dual channel mode, so I should notice a boost in that regard.. my current 754 board doesn't support dual channel.
Maybe this time next year I'll upgrade to PCI-Express. |
