Ahhh....I'm glad to finally see some non-video game game content on PO! People who only play video games don't know what they're missing! At any rate, here are some ideas...
There is ALWAYS Magic, and I'm probably the #1 advocator of it that you will find on PO. While I do play fairly competitively now, (and Ultra's right...playing competitively is a LOT of fun) you absolutely don't have to play competitively to have a good time, nor do you even have to keep up with EVERYTHING that's happening in the game. Your best bet if you wanted to get into Magic would be to pick yourself up a 9th Edition Theme deck, and sit down with Therin or Ultra who'll teach you how to play. It shouldn't take you too long to learn and even master. Tobs taught a friend of his how to play like a month ago, and that friend recently accompanied us and played in a Magic Pro Tour Qualifier over the weekend, and did pretty well for his first tournament. If you ever decide to go this route, you can always talk with Me, Tobs, Therin, or Ultra.
As far as miniatures go, if the painting is REALLY that much of an issue for you, you can always try Mage Knight or even Hero Clix (although personally, MK is a much cooler genre). The figures are pre-painted and come in booster pack, just like card games. You then build you army and play. The best part though is the combat dial that all pieces have, so you don't have to have a huge rulebook to determine what does what, etc. It probably takes a good 2 hours to learn how to fully play Mage Knight. There are also Star Wars miniatures and Dungeons and Dragons miniatures, in case you wanted to try something different. I don't know too much about the games, but I know that the pieces are sold just like Mage Knight and Hero Clix. If you want to know more about Mage Knight, ask Tobs. He was a tournament level player at one point and knows his stuff pretty well.
I, personally, am about to invest in a miniatures game, but not Warhammer. It's called Warmachine, and you can read about it here: http://privateerpress.com/WARMACHINE/default.php
What I like about this game is that it's pretty fresh, and I LOVE the genre. They refer to it as "Full Metal Fantasy", and it involves combat with giant steam-powered golems called Warjacks commanded by battlemages called Warcasters. There are only 4 main factions right now (in addition to mercenary groups), each of which you can buy a Battle Group Box Set (which costs about $40) for, which contains everything you need (excluding paint and glue to build the figures), including basic rules, to play a basic game right out of the box.
So that's all I have for now. If you have any questions about anything I mentioned, do let me know. |

im glad Ming is pimping the Warmachine...im hoping to try to get into it, since it is still relatively new and is a rather fun-looking game...and it has the genre that i appreciate best, mechanical fantasy, or as they say "full metal fantasy."
But as far as miniatures games go, i was a big player of mageknight at one point, and while i think it was a good game, i kind of halted gameplay when the game underwent huge changes for a new set, rendering most of hte figures not as good anymore. What i can say though is that while it did undergo changes, it was still a fun game, and before heroclicks took off, this wasthe game before it.
anywho, have fun with it...just dont make too big of an investment unless you are definite about the game senor. |

Ah, my housemate plays heroclix - however he's a HUGE mechwarrior player, so his collection on the mech clix is supirior in number to the few heroclix he has. He also plays Ledgend of the Five Rings Card game.
I play MAGIC the gathering too, well - I play when there's a game on. I'm a casual player, I have two decks and thats it >.>
I also love playing games such as D&D, Shadowrun (awesome game, they've brought out a new book!), some white wolf games (like Vampire, Werewolf and Dark Ages Fae). Table Top rp's are funz ^.^ |

Thyanks for the pimpin ming, just one more type that will interest me so. Specially the pirates part. Also judging from what I saw, the pricing of it is a bit more merciful on the wallet. |

I have a small army of orcs and goblins from when graillick and I tried to get into warhammer 40k. Too expensive, not enough time or opponents. I use them now (along with Mage Knight figures) for DnD. Good, fast, cheap, and with a little imagination a giant lizard or skeleton can look like just about anything you want if you squint and take a shot of whisky. Its better than flat marbles >_< |
