I grew up on Pee Wee Herman, I remember when I was a kid I used to imitate him all the time. I'm wierd, but I always saw Pee-Wee as just Pee-wee. Paul Ruben is Paul Ruben but Pee-Wee is not Paul Ruben, y'know? To make it less confusing I always saw them as separate people and I always felt like the -character- of Pee-Wee was his own person, aside from Paul Ruben. And I think I finally realize after all these years why Pee-Wee Herman is the best character ever.
Y'see, Pee-Wee is that cool guy everyone wants to grow up to be. He's got a sweet bike, never has to work and he can have fun all day. Look at what he wears, to an adult he looks like a tool but I bet if you asked a kid what his idea of a grown up was it would be something goofy like what Pee-Wee wears. Where else but in the mind of a child could you find an outfit like that with that Bow-Tie that to a kid probably looks really sharp.
Look at the plot of Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Pee-Wee's bike gets stolen by the snobby rich kid next door and he ends up going all over the country to find it eventually leading him to Warner Brothers studios in Hollywood. Where else could that surrealism exist? I think that's the thing I finally understand about that movie. In a way it's not just for kids, but it's also a window into that Kid's Life that we all used to have. All the things you used to care about doing. Riding Bikes, Having Adventures, whatever. It all happens In Pee-Wee's World. |

I saw one of the ads last night. Technically, "saw" isn't the right word. I heard the ad. All it said was "Remeber This?" on a black background while the opening sound effects played in the background. It took me about five seconds, then a huge grin broke out on my face. It was like someone said the secret word or something. |
