It's sad to see them go.
And there's almost nothing you can do to stop it. Even if you try going all greenpeace and chaining yourself to it, they'll just have you arrested and cut it down anyway. Believe me, I tried. Luckily, with no concequences.
But, like I said, I live in Podunk, Alabama. All we have is old people and trees. And no one wants to live in a town of just old people.
And I understand the poor animals. I have a pet deer. She lives in the woods by my house. I feed her Purina Deer Chow. (They acutally sell that at Wal-Marts here. Don't ask me.)
lets all take a moment of silence for the trees.
And if things don't improve, I suggest calling in the big guns--That's right kids--The Lorax |

He's frightening enough to scare the begeebies out of tree-offenders, yet cute enough to preach to kids the true value of a good tree. |

oh god .. This is one of my pet peeves.. You guys get to hear me simi rant (yes for once ^-^) and then I’ll be quiet bout it...
i live in Ga. too and I dont like subdavisions myself (i couldnt see me living in one). dont get me wrong they're fine and good in moderation but its not good to have too many and Especially in my county where they build them everywhere. Another thing that ticks me off in most counties have a limit to how many people can move into that county, but ours doesn’t. If you don’t want trees and shade and wanta build a lot of subdivisions.. Move somewhere where they don’t have trees and rolling hills.. Like Texas ^-^ ... or at the very least make them more environment friendly. I'm constantly hearing about people getting attacked by wild animals in they're back yards. This year 5 bear attacks and a few fox. We're moving into they're homes. We need to be at least educated neighbors and realize that if we are gona destroy their home we’re gona have to live -with- them.
Cutting down the trees has a huge thing with water and weather as well. the trees provide moister but we're cutting them all down.. Which is part of the reason our rainfall is much lower than it should be. World wide cutting trees and our rising pollution its effecting the weather in more drastic ways. Natural disasters are increasing each year cause we're being so damn careless with our own world. And we -know- what we're doing!. its not -that hard- to recycle and not use certain products or at least limit the use of them. If the human race -as a whole- stopped fighting against ourselves, worked together, and got off our ass' and did something this world could be so much better. I've heard people say stuff like well "people suck" or "people are stupid” When we don’t have be! we don’t have to kill ourselves and our world. We just have to change our lifestyles.
^^ Which I’m happy to say more people are starting too. Yaay! * Happy dance* its not much but its a start ^-^
See i still ended my evil rant on a happy note !^-^+2
my last bit and i'll shut up, i promise... is a challange. anyone who's not happy with how things are going . do something bout it! ^-^ plant a tree! *bounces* or recycle at least one thing, get more energy efficient cars (yeah i know this comment it gona bite me in the rear)..ect. If a lot of people make small changes it adds up to one big change. |

What would be excellent (and is probably being done by someone/group highly underfunded): Buying up plots of land in cities and planting them full of trees. If I ever win it big in the lottery, I'm definitely doing this. Ecologically oriented groups from colleges in major cities (read: cities with multiple large colleges) also might be able to work together to raise enough money to get some trees planted on a small plot. That'd be cool. |

Look im gonna be completely 99% serious here, let's just get some Decoder rings and then unite our powers to summon Captain Planet. He'll teach those scumbags not to cut down our trees....
I can sympathize with the feeling of losing nature though. Where I lived in California, was all mountainous. We used to have Coyote sightings, Rattlers in people's backyards, Mountain Lions eating people's cats and dogs. Not so much anymore, we cut down the mountains and robbed them of their homes. How do I feel about it? I dunno. I understand we need to have space for people, but at what cost? It kinda feels shitty to be exterminating one species' way of life in order to satiate anothers. What can we do about it?
One thing is make sure that all those animals in that area can get relocated somewhere else, like a preserve or something. Granted we'll just keep pushing their borders until they're gone, but you know it's better than nothing. Faraebie has some good ideas too. |

Yay! I had a good idea! I feel special.
There are also some companies that do try to help. For example, when you check out at Ikea you can "buy a tree" for $1, and Ikea matches every dollar raised (so you're really buying two). You don't actually buy a tree and take it home, but you pay a dollar and they plant a tree (two trees) deal. It's one of those things. |

I don't personally know the Lorax, but I do have a heck of a lot to say on this subject.
First of all, I'd like to get out there that I do live in a subdivision that cut down almost all its trees, but we did leave the hills. However, there is no risk of people building around us because the suwanee creek preserve hugs us. I think they even might've bought the land from the preserve, but anyways. The preserve stops a little away from the road and they're going to build a large (probably Asian) shopping center next to my subdivision.
On the bright side, I'll now be able to walk to the store in less than ten minutes, which would be awesome. I love in cities how you can just get up and walk somewhere without all this planning, worrying about gas, etc. I really do just love that, but it's so hard to find in the suburbs. As they build, things are getting closer together. Also, this new shopping center has started construction already. The only thing that has been cleared is a path just large enough to fit some construction equipment, so I wonder if they're going to clear only what they absolutely need.
Because of the usual incompetence in building artfully with nature, they take the easy way out and just demolish anything they -think- will be in their way. Then they build and anything that is left over they cover with grass and "landscape" with puny trees (it seems so empty around shopping centers). However, these trees are going to grow. As time goes on, this place won't be so new, and progress will have moved on. Trees with grow back, and animal populations will regenerate. Humans will learn eventually, and mother nature is much too strong to be beaten down by we puny little beings. That's my hippie talking. ;] |
