The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess proved more than mildly attractive, as well, selling more than 240,000 copies, representing roughly 74% of the total Wii buyers. Wii Play (which comes out here early next year) mostly kept pace, too, with 50% of new Wii owners picking up a copy -- the bundled Wiimote probably helped.

And where was Nintendo DS in all this? Selling more than Wii, apparently, as Nintendo Europe says the dual-screened handheled enjoyed its highest selling week overseas ever, selling a monumental 515,000 units in a single week. Since March of last year, the DS has moved 8.5 million units and its numbers don't seem to be slowing down. Somehow, they're going up.

The DS outselling the Wii in the same week is the real story here. I'd think that with parents (which is who I'm assuming bought a fair share of Wiis) not being able to get one, they'd simply wait. Nintendo is cleaning up here. Sony is not going to equal this output for quite a while. Even once they are able to get enough PS3's on the market they'll still have a hurdle to climb (tho I'm sure that in the long run they'll succeed). Seems Nin's "Wii will be a great second console" s=theory was a bit flawed. It's a great MAIN console!

OK I hate to sound like the ignoramus here but what's the big deal about the Wii? All I've seen except for Zelda has left me wholly underwhelmed. Are there some awesome features for it? Are we all just old schoolers who hope to have Nintendo be the top dog again? What's going on? Enlighten me please. Somebody. Anybody.

I'm going to try real hard not to be a smartass here

Well the main "big deal" is that the controller is totally motion sensitive. You play baseball, you really swing the controller like you would a bat. You play the bowling, you have to make the complete motion of throwing the ball (but DO NOT throw the controller). No more simple button presses to do everything. I played one fight of the boxing and almost ended up with a heart attack! Ducking, dodging, and throwing mad combinations is like nothing else. Nintendo has seriously brought "virtual reality" home. The PS3's "motion" feature is simply a tilt axis program that looks to be more of a gimmick feature right now. But aside from the Wii Sports disc included with the Wii (What? A game included with a console???), I played Monster 4x4 where you ahve to actually steer the truck with the controller like a steering wheel. I am mildly ashamed to say that my girlfriend lost the first race and then won the next 7 before I graciously stepped aside.

Oh, and it's got a rumble feature built in with the motion sensitivity. Something Sony said couldn't be done on the Sixaxis. Of course we know why it's really not there.

As for the old school downloadable games, it's cute but most of us have those games on the original systems. It's more for convenience. I know I'll sound like a PR man here but Nintendo has truly changed the way we play games.

That's pretty f'in cool, no doubt and maybe if it does take top slot like many of you believe it will. Itmay help the lack of excersize in the USA but what if you just want to come home and relax with a game? Are there any options for bowling from the comfort of your couch?

Bowling...no. I have played the baseball while sitting down but you do still have to swing the remote to bat and pitch. It's workable, just not as fun (I do still stand when the game gets tight). Bowling, boxing, and golf would be nearly unplayable sitting down (as they would be in real life) tho I guess you could still play tennis.

Imagine playing DDR with a dance mat while sitting down. It could be done but how much fun would that be?

And I didn't even mention the infra red feature that has you aiming at the screen in first person shooters (Metroid, for example). I think it also works that way in Call Of Duty.

I don't know if I could support a system that based it's whole control system around movement. As cool as it is, for myself I do a lot of heavy work at my job and gametime is sit down time.

Now this is something that I'll will forego my comfort for! I'm a big FPS fan so my days off would be filled with this kind of Wii action. Thanks, Razer.

Now that's the (big) flaw in the system. I expect Nin to really push hard for all developers to make use of the motion controls for the first year or so (or first generation of software) to cement the diffs between the Wii and other systems. I have Rayman Raving Rabbids for the PS2 and I'm guessing that the Wii version is going to have you swin the Wiimote in place of twirling the PS2 stick (for example). I really doubt we'll see much software coming out before Fall 07 that doesn't (over)use the controller. Sometimes it'll work, sometimes it won't. In Madden, you have to physically pass and kick the ball. Throw soft to lob or hard to bullet it, but who the Hell is going to throw it soft during a heated game? It's like when Tekken announced they would use the PS2's analog shoulder controls (and very few people even knew they were analog). In a fighting game, when are you NOT going to press the button hard? Now considering the Wii is much more than a button, you may go easy at times but I doubt it. After a hard day at work, you will not find much relaxation in Wii games.

I'm hoping that once we get past the whole "total body gameplay" thing, we can use the pointer features for things like Koei games or lower level RT Strategy games where the Wiimote can be used as a mouse. You can obviously move it faster across a screen than you can using a regular controller. ALso maybe they'll make a REAL yugioh game for a non-GBA system and you can use it to select cards, etc. Realistically, it's just an extension of the DS stylus control so Nin's been traing us basically.
As far as doing it wrong tho, I'm very afraid that the Pokemon game is going to use it to make you throw your pokeball every time...and that'll be it.

It's a good idea and a natural progression in gaming but it does leave a massive hole for misuse.
