Well, went and say this last night and it was fantastic! Lyra is ridiculously charming, in fact, EVERY character in the movie is interesting and fun. There wasn't one character that I felt was weakly portrayed or unnecessary to the story. Also the seamless CG is something else entirely. Since every person in the world has a daemon, there are tons of the little creatures running around all the time, even extras and people in the background or busy city streets all have their daemons with them - its really quite technologically impressive.
So anyway, I havnt read the books, went in with no expectations and left with a really great story in a really beautiful and unique world. The attention to detail on the 'parallel' world aspect is unreal. Their decanters, doors, closets, tables, everything is just like our stuff...just slightly different - its all fits together so naturally. So check this one out. If you were leery, don't be, its worth seeing twice. |

I loved it too. We went and saw it last night, and I thought it was fantastic! Walks was telling me about how it differed from the book-- mostly they re-organized things and took out some stuff that's in the book, but that I think they're probably just saving for the next movie, because they simply haven't gotten that far in this movie yet.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Pan. And The guy with the Rabbit. And the bear. And then...uh...Roger? Lyra's okay, but a little too Deus Ex Machina, like she was designed to be the solution to every problem. I'm hoping she gets a few more layers in the next movie, and I can definitely see that happening, as this really seemed more like an introduction than anything as far as the characters were concerned. And Seraphina was just too...obvious? I don't know. Something about her was a bit much for me. I did like the history with her and the priest guy, though, as it seems like it might be an interesting twist later on.
It's -beautiful-, too. And the storyline's fantastic. It's just the characters that could use a little more fleshing out. But, like I said, it seems like that's more likely to happen in further movies as this was just the introduction. <3 |

********SPOILER!!!********
A polar bear gets his f**king jaw ripped off!
Best moment in movie History...It replaced Simon Pegg jump kicking an old British woman in the face.
That is SO not a spoiler! I didn't say which bear...Yeesh...Here's another spoiler Lyra gets the Golden Compass! |

I admit, I was apprehensive about the casting decisions, especially Mrs. Coulter, but I have to say, after seeing it, all the things I was worried about with Nicole Kidman in the role actually work to her advantage. Good movie, and I'm wondering where the next one is going to start.

Additionally, is it me, or is it almost guaranteed that if you see Christopher Lee or Ian McKellan in a movie, you'll see or hear the other one as well? |

I know!! I was looking forward to that terribly, but I suppose they wanted to downplay the obvious Atheism of the book. It's what drew me to the books years ago in the first place!
Link to Time.com interview with Pullman (conducted by the blogger of Nerd World, Lev Grossman!)
Overall, I thought it was terrible. It was waaay too fast, the characters that are truly important did not get enough screen time, and the daemons just looked like talking pets. I blame the Director, mostly. And I don't think the story is very, you know, movieable. There are things that should just stay books, like Chuck Palahnuik's Haunted. Read the books!! Much better than the movie.
The only good part was the bear fight. Throughout the rest of it I was cringing. Here's Lev Grossman's review from his blog. (Yeah, I really like Lev Grossman, bite me)
I honestly hope they don't make the Subtle Knife. They have to either change directors or get a lot more into the meaning of the book. Many of the same complaints I have for LotR in plot development and such I have for this movie (though I think the Golden Compass was much, much worse). Ok, I'm done. :] |

It did move rather quick - I would not have been opposed to an extra 30-60 minutes if it meant they could slow down some on the pace and do a little more explaining of why the people are working together. |

I enjoyed it. Of course I have a mancrush on Sam Elliot. I've also never read any of the books.
