Watch it with subs the once, then ignore them the second time round, its told so well by the characters on screen actions rather than their words that once you have a vague idea of the story its all great without them! It truly is a wonderful (in a sort of bad way in some ways) film that I didn't think I'd get much enjoyment out of but I did and its one of my favourite films that I'd watch more often if Chixie had of enjoyed it. |

Hmm...no clue what my alltime favorite is...unless you want to consider Starwars...J/K!
Its not to much the fairytales i love, but rather the method in which they are told. Im a fan of Joseph campbell, so the Hero's myth, or anything that has a hero in it, makes me get all tingly inside.
But stories that stick in my head always:
Beowulf
Gilgamesh
The Odyssey
The Illiad
can't really think of anything else. I'm sure there are a million more.

We get it, tobs!! Jeesh!
The Odyssey is awesome. (Andrew was almost named Ulysses but Melissa disapproved )
The selkies are cool characters (irish or finnish [can't remember] folklore about people that turn into seals)
In the late 80s there was a Jim Henson show where they used muppets to tell classic fairytales... sometimes ones with a dark twist and I'm sure that's why the series didn't last. I think there were only 5 or so episodes. When it was cancelled, I cried.
Pan's Labyrinth was UNBELIEVABLY good! Please, Krys, put aside your dislike and give Riva's suggestion a chance. It is so worth it.
I love love love dark twists on fairytales! That's one of the reasons I think God Of War was so amazing. I'm hooked. Except now,I just think Kratos is kind of a douchebag at times. Wah there's gods! Wah I have to do something I don't want to! I'll just throw myself off of a cliff, wah!
I agree with Nari about the Tale Of Arjuna. It is begun in the Bhagavad Gita and gone into more depth in the Mahabarata. It has it all: a reluctant hero, a personable god, magic weapons, an emotional and difficult battle that must be won (against his own family!), and insight into the human soul.
Lord Of The Rings and Star Wars. Both are so immersive that fans and the authors have made expansive maps and created entire languages to supplement and expand the experience. Inspiring and entertaining!
Daedalus and Icarus
The story of Orestes
The seige of Troy
AAAAAHHHHHHHH where does it end??!!! No Where? AAAWWWWEEESSSOOOMMMMEEE!
/psychotic fanboy rant |

i am a fan of the three little pigs...the full version where the 3rd pig eats the wolf in a stew and the old versions of the Grimm faery tales. one dark rework (NO CHILDREN ALLOWED) of a faery tale i like is sleeping beauty. the awakening of her in anne rice's version is not too different from the original version. the main thing is that she was awakened by her baby seeking a teat rather than being raped as in AR version.
i love greek mythology too and particularly the Odessey and the creation story with Chronos and Chaos.
Mythos like that of Lovecraft's vision is based upon greek mythology and other mythologies and stories like that is my favorite type of topic to read. i am even working on a story that is like his mythos but from a modern time. |

I like Rapunzel. The ORIGINAL Rapunzel. Before anyone changed it a bit. The one where she turns up pregnant after "romps" in teh tower with the prince. And it's discovered because she asks the evil fairy why her clothes are so tight now. It was one of the first ones cut because it covered the topic of pregnancy
The Boy Who Went Forth To Learn How To Shudder is another good one.
My dad owns a copy of the book Grimm's Grimmest. My mom bought it for him. I read it. |
