Hey, I'm not a Yankee. We weren't involved in that war, thankyouverymuch. We just barely weren't Mexico anymore. xD
I just think it's lazy, and I hate people who are lazy about language. I feel like 'y'all' and terms like that are just butchering it further. English is complicated enough as it is! Stop being lazy!
Buzzwords don't bother me quite as much, because most of them go out of fashion rather quickly. It's chatspeak and lolspeak and poor grammar/laziness that really bug me. |

I don't think it's laziness as much as it is habit. When I first moved here when I was like 12, I got caught in the habit of saying "ya'll" for a while.
I had to force myself to break that habit. Now I say "you guys." |

I think the difference is that something like saying "y'all" is regional dialect/slang, where the word "Staycation" is a buzzword.
Honestly, I like regional dialects, and I think they are as much a part of our language as "proper English" is. I find it interesting that people from different areas of our own country come to use regional slang for different things. Some parts of New England call water fountains "Bubblers". It's weird at first, but after a while it's almost endearing.
Buzzwords, on the other hand, are just annoying. They're created by people who think they're just so clever, who have nothing better to do than invent new words and phrases to descibe mundane things to make themselves feel smarter than they actually are. |

As Ming said, alot of whats been brought up here is just regional dialect, it's not laziness it's just something that comes with being brought up in certain regions. For example as long as I remember everyone around me would say Ta as a means of saying Thank You, yet when I moved to where I am now, people would give me funny looks and Chixie would even take the mickey and say "thats the stuff they use to make roads" (as in tar) |

Er. Most of the regional dialect in the South came about because of laziness. Y'all is most definitely the lazy way of saying "You All". Which is slightly entertaining because they take so long saying it, they might as well just say "You All."
I like -some- dialect (I particularly enjoy using British words and 'dude' a lot) but, not when they're just butchering the language. It reminds me too much of newspeak.
Buzzwords don't bother me at all. The English language needs some new words, though I'd be more interested in a genderless pronoun than a 'staycation'. Still, at least the word 'staycation' serves a purpose-- it indicates that you're not -going- somewhere on your holiday, but staying at home, which is just disambiguation. Nothing wrong with that. |

Or...people who say "Staycation" could stop being lazy and say, "I'm staying home". |

It may have started out as laziness, but now it's just passed on to future generations. |

Yes, well, you know how I feel about doing things just because of tradition, or, in other words, "Because that's the way my mom, my grandma, and her momma did it, even if it doesn't make any sense!" |

I really don’t have any problem with the word y’all, anymore. When you think about it all contractions are lazy forms of communication, as we aren’t taking the time to type or annunciate those few extra letters or sounds. I wouldn’t be able to get upset at its use for it being lazy of the speaker, and not all contractions used by everyone else. The only difference is that y’all is regional slang, and the rest are legitimate contractions, but slang has its own acceptable place in informal conversation according to the –current- rules of English grammar.
Maybe it was born of laziness or maybe simply a misunderstanding of the rules of the English language passed down through farming families with little educational opportunities. But there is no way to prove what started it so one can only guess. It’s in popular use –now- because being used by the previous generation and children tend to pick up the speech patterns of the adults in their lives, and it will always be so.
But back on topic, I don’t really have a problem with staycation and other such buzzwords in general. I don’t use them except to refer to industry terms (as I have to or sadly no one will know what I'm talking about) as I think they are just silly, but whatever, that is their prerogative. People are always going to be cheap bandwagon riders. Buzzwords are at least trivial enough that I can tune them out until the fad dies. |
