i don't think it's bashing to say that you dislike poor grammar. it annoys me, too. i understand it when English is somebody's seconds or third language, but there's just no excuse for not knowing your own language. which is not so say that mistakes are intolerable; they only become a problem when they are repeated over and over in lieu of correct spelling or better phrasing. it's stuff most people should have learned in grade school, so i get easily frustrated with anyone over 12 who mangles the English language on a regular basis.
yes, i am a grammar snob. there, i said it! and i'm damn proud of my superior grasp of the 3rd-grade Language Arts curriculum!

i once heard it is better to stand out than be part of the crowd,so i like my spelling just the way it is
if anyone wants to bash on it than they may feel welcome to because right now none of that matters....it doesnt matter what people think about you...its how you think about yourself that counts. |

The way I look at it is that no one is getting grades here. This isn't a class. This is a conversation board, we post like we talk, and we don't all talk with perfect grammatical structure. In fact, I have yet to meet someone that DOES. So, as far as I'm concerned, if you can be understood and get your point across it doesn't really matter. Grammer becomes important only when it gets to the point of incoherency.

which can be a problem on boards where someone is trying to express something they are upset about, yet are making very little sense in the process.
I think part of it boils down to respect. If you're grammar and spelling is atrocious enough, you're not going to be respected. People will complain, and then the person will get defensive. The people who aren't willing to respect the person will be labeled shallow, and then its all over (meaning it just goes downhill from there).
I think that if you're inconsiderate enough to not even try to watch your grammar when you're posting, then you're just asking for trouble (not necessarily from me, though. i'm fairly nonconfrontational, but i have been known to point out flagrant spelling mistakes on occasion).
I'm willing to let a lot of things slide, though. Even if i still believe that net abreviations for short words are absurd.
ps: (as my audio teacher would say..) NEVER END A SENTENCE WITH A PREPOSTITION!!!  |
