Dude this rocks!!
And Az, you're kidding about Russia, right? Axes are no respecters of theater, as you'll notice with Bush's "axis of evil" (won't start shouting obscenities, won't start shouting obscenities). Iraq and Iran are in the same theater, but North Korea's not exactly middle east material. It was the same in WWII: Germany, Italy and Japan. USSR wasn't officially an enemy until the cold war started in earnest at the end of WWII. Before that we were concerned about the results of the Russian Revolution, but were too isolationist to worry about it much. Communism didn't officially become the great evil until European fascism (most especially the form of Germany's National Socialists) was put down. So no, the writer wasn't being inaccurate.
And ya just gotta love Chadguay, especially if it gets used to poke fun at one of our president's less intelligent (and more frustrating) proclamations. |

But if you remember the war we weren't concerned with the European theater until Japan was decimated. After that we officially threw our hats into the ring. So how could Japan have been an Axis if it was already decimated before the axis was engaged? We were selling guns and ammo to the Germans up until the day before we went to fight them..Possibly after.
And Russia was teamed with Germany till Germany did a Backstab with a 67% increase in damage and a +167 to attack. THEN after they joined us and won they splintered off into the cold war behind the iron curtain. We didn't care they were Commies in WW2 we just wanted to make sure they weren't gonna kill us.
And in all reality France was an Axis of evil since they surrendered so quickly and the Germans used their people and factories to build a bigger and better army. I mean how ELSE could D-day have gone so badly if the Germans weren't rooted into France so much? Them bastards pleaded for our help then shot at our own troops when we tried to save their asses! |

That's not true.
The surrender dates don't reflect what you're saying. Germany surrendered to the allies on 8 May, 1945, Japan surrendered the following fall, on Sept 2, 1945. We dropped the bomb on Hiroshima August 6, 1945 and on Nagasaki August 9.
Looking at the European theater, D-Day being June 6, 1944, we were pretty heavily involved in the Europe a year before the bomb or Japan's surrender.
I find it unlikely we sold weapons to Germany through the war. Our weapons were incompatible and Germany's small arms were generally better than ours, but I haven't ever looked into our trade with Germany during the war. You may be right. (It's not like we haven't done that sort of thing in more recent history.)
And I agree with you on the communism thing, we weren't so worried about whether the Russians were communists until the cold war. And, you know if any of the +167 came from magic weapons, or where I can get hold of them?
Looking through some more resources as far as members of the Axis though, it looks like there are differences of opinion about whether Japan was really an Axis nation, which I'd never seen before your comment. It looks like we may just be coming from different sources on that point, so, I'd say you and Cleese are both being reasonably accurate on the history, just coming from different perspectives. |

How exactally did this turn into a history debate again? Oh, you mean it was a joke ment to be funny? Crap, I thought this came straight from the newest, most up-to-date text books.
Yeah, that's what I thought.  |

Yeah... I guess it's kinda become a hijacked thread.
Started off meaning well... just wanted to say that Cleese was funny and historically accurate. Then came "must make sure facts correct" mode. ^^;
Sorry folks, 'specially to you Az,... not trying to make anybody angry (if that's happened).
Did I mention that this John Cleese thing is daaang funny?
Thanks Sci ^^;
