As much as that kid WAS a punk, he does have every right to sit if he wants, and the teacher has no right to attempt to force his students to do anything like that.
What gets to me is pride. Pride is ok in small doses, but when it goes overboard, it causes problems. It's the reason guys like that teacher act the way they do. It's the reason why Boston Red Sox fans flip cars with NY liscence plates in Boston when the Sox beat the Yankees, and the reason some girl was killed in a Boston Red Sox fan riot. We get too worked up over things that aren't worth getting so worked up for, and we trascend the realm of being a "fan" to being an obsessive "fanatic". |

My question is what started the teacher's rant. In the beginning of the video, we can tell he's already pissed, my question is what did they do to aggravate him. Yeah, he might have gone overboard, but who knows if maybe the kids were being disrespectful towards the flag and disturbing the idealism of the Pledge and Anthem. |

I actually don't think the kid really has the right to just sit there..He should stand at the least.
Basically he is a citizen of the US...He is in a Governmentally funded school... He is being taught by a teacher paid by the government.
That kid in that class room has no right to sit during pledge OR anthem.
If he wants to sit he can go in the hall and sit or he can go to a private school.
As long as MY money is paying for YOUR education you will respect this country enough to stand during a pledge or anthem. I don't care if you say it. Hell you can say a pledge that is anti-american to yourself. But you show the country that is allowing you to have your freedom some damn respect! |

Well GAAZ, school in this country is mandatory which kind of means that he's being forced to spend your money. If school were a choice I would probably agree with you. But seeing as how this country was founded on the basis of freedom I believe that he does have the option to just sit there and do whatever the hell he pleases as long as it doesn't detract from the other students experience. |

See I think this has less to do with the pledge and more to do with the student respecting the teacher. What is missing here is what happened to get the teacher that angry.
Probably the same students being more defiant.
You know if the teacher says to stand for the pledge, then just stand, if you really think it's wrong, go to his superior later.
Defying him and pissing him off is not going to solve anything.
Personally I think it would have served the kid right if he would have fallen on his ass! |

Surely you are correct, Shino-sama. The circumstances leading up to this situation are worth scrutiny and these kids probably have a long history of being complete @$$holes to the unfortunate sap. But I also think he can ask them to do something and if they refuse then that's their choice. I guess the important thing to decide is where the boundaries are for what the teacher has a right to punish them. Respect, Religion and Political Views are choices and/or opinions; so is it right to punish someone for their choices and/or opinions? |

Well Shado, in this case, the teacher represents a figure of authority. Respect in most cases with a figure of authority is NOT a choice.
Think about it. If you were in Boot Camp, and you didn't respect the drill instructor, do you think he would be nice about it. Hell no, he would be in your face screaming his lungs out and makeing you do pushups until the next day!
I don't think respect is too much to ask from kids.. .however in a lot of cases, they do. |

Someone can yell at you until they're blue in the face but ultimately it is your choice on how to act/react to the situation they create. And if they try to enforce the situation through violence then eventually there will be some outcry and/or someone to fight back. And then authority must look at it self as vulnerable and therefore, fallible.
They could punish a guy for not paying his taxes by throwing him in jail for an alotted time and he might just become somebody's girlfriend but now he has a free place to live doesn't have to work and who's to say that he doesn't like being a girlfriend?
I guess it all depends on perspective to a great degree and what you care about and want. If you want what someone else has you'll learn the rules of the game they're playing and join in as best you can and learn the details as you go. |

I guess that's just a problem of the Jail system. Perhaps the Punishment isn't enough to stop someone from making poor decisions. |
