never saw it before the movie but my GF said to me when it came out that we were going to see it. I loved the movie and I have to admit that this is the FIRST movie to make me cry went I was in a good mood.......I just couldn't help myself whent Angel dead....but my GF didn't see it so I guess she'll never know that I can cry...seriously though I don't think that she has ever seen me cry and its been 14 months with PLENTY of things for me to cry about.

hmmm... well, my feelings for the movie were mixed.

on one level, I've been a RENT-head since I was 12. I've seen the show six times, (three times touring cast, and three times Broadway). So saying, I was inclined to love the movie. I mean, it was RENT. Gotta love it....

But I was also dissapointed. The movie just didn't click right.. It definatly came off as a movie made for the fans. The director stayed true to the show's roots, (including some of the origianl stage blocking which can be seen in the La Vie Boheme number)....but it both helped and hurt the movie as a whole. The movie seemed caught between being a movie version of the show, and being a screen capture of the stage perfermance. It dosen't fully capture the effect of the original form, and it dosen't seem to uphold to the norm of a regular motion picture.

A scene that comes to mind is Idena's "Over the moon" number. It just didn't seem to work on-screen. and it's not because it's a bad scene, it's because of the way it was presented.

Another factor presented in a few bad reviews the movie got, was the dated plot. The plot was intended to have an effect on the people who were living that life. It won so many awards in 1995 because it effected people in a personal way....and although AIDS is still in no way a small matter, It's effect on the general masses just dosen't seem as prominate now as it did then. And remember, when RENT came out, it was a shocking, daring, and 'seedy' musical for broadway standards. I remember being afraid to let my mom hear me listening to the soundtrack because it had the "F" word in it. ^_^ However, now, the shock factor has no effect. The movie was rated pg-13, and the cursing was expected.

In my opinion, the movie came out a little too late to have the effect I feel it deserved to give.

On a Good note: The Performance was great! Idna sounds SOO much better now that she knows how to belt without hurting her cords, Tracy was fantastic, Anthony is always a star in my book, and Rosairo's Mimi was very well done.

In a nutshell, I ABSOLUTLY ADORE the Show...but I can also see why some people would dislike the movie.

woot woot
