aye...self defense is good. But lest i stress also: Its not a means of warding off people. That, and if you are outnumbered, sometimes a martial art cant really do much. Especially at gun-point.

But it is good, nonetheless. I know my dad took a style that im trying to find out more information about, called Goju-Ryu. It's an okinawan form that incorporates a lot of real-life attacks that take no time to do, and usually end up putting the baddies on the floor.

Anywho, sorry to play a sort of devil's advocate to the self defense idea. Its a good idea, and many people should learn it...but some people don't have the control for it. And this causes them to improperly use it in times of stress, when they are most important.

That is all

Yes, but understand, I may have kept a solid composure, but I was scared out of my wits. I am tiny, very tiny, and I do not believe in guns, and I do not wish to carry one. But some defense is better than none at all. If the guy had tried to grab me, and I knew how to get away from him, it would be much better than being thrown in the back of a car and raped, wouldn't you say?

My mother came to this country when she was my age. Within a few months, she was out jogging, and a guy grabbed her, and tried to pull her in his car, probably to rape her. She managed to get away, but the guy was never caught, and she never went jogging in the comfortable hours again. She wasn't able to, she was too afraid.

I don't want to be afraid.

aye...not saying you should carry out a gun or anything...but on the other side of martial arts, there's also wisdom...that is, getting held up at knife-point or at verbal threaten point is nothing compared to gunpoint. THat gun is much simpiler to use then any tool that requries force to use. That is why guns are very dangerous.

but hey, ive never been in a situation like this...all i can say is that you go with the flow, and try out the self defense. It could really help out in a situation

So yeah, think defence, in mind and in action. Regardless of what you choose to take, weither it's judo, karate, Tae Kwon do, appear as you don't know anything about martial arts, taking a stance will either make them think you're a wanna-be or make them draw a knife/gun/club whatever. And regardless of their reactions, it will rise their guards up for anything you'd say or do, just the way you'll look at them in the eyes can tell a lot on your intentions, and in your self-confidence. If they see a self confident person without any stance ... and FEEL the self-confidence in you, it might be worst then if you just took a defencive stance in front of them since they can either start to panic or become VERY defencive in their threatening methods (say, the person was at reach about 3 feet from you and asked you for your money, now, and then just the way you looked at him could trigger insecurity in his mind that might not turn to your advantage, cause he could quickly step backward out of your grasp and draw a weapon against you ... that lowers your odds of tackling him down.

But know that it can also tell a lot on THEIR intentions to know how they look at you. There is so much lil things that can lead to avoiding the situation of where you defend yourself with force, so much lil things that can be overlooked either because of our lack of knowledge about them, stress in the situation, or our lack of will to do anything about it (like, ''wish for it to end soon so you can just move on'' or something)

I don't want to start situations. I would just like to know that---say the guy had grabbed me. I would feel much more comfortable walking around at night, knowing that if something like that happened again, and he had grabbed me and tried to drag me off somewhere to rape me, or had tried to hit me, I could either defend myself, or at least get away. As it stands, I have very little confidence in my ability to do so.

*nods* I'm not the type of person to go and get myself into a situation involving guns. I don't plan on being held at knifepoint anytime in the near future. I would just like to know that, in a situation where some guy tried to pull me off the street and rape me, or grab me, or was following me screaming obscenities like in this scenario, I wouldn't be so afraid that I couldn't move.

It's really easy to say something like that when you've never been in such a situation. And you know what?? I'm broke. I just moved 2500 miles, with barely any money, and now I'm here in a strange place, with nothing but a little bit of savings and a maxed-out credit card. Im trying desperately to get a job. I'm a little bit scared for myself, okay? I don't know anybody here, save for one. If I go missing, he's the only one that would look for me, and he wouldn't even know where to start.

I'm going to visit the shotokan center I've found. I can't afford classes right now, but as soon as I establish a regular income, I'm signing up.

I understand your fears, Scrummy - but I think BWS-1 was joking - hinting at himself, to try and lighten the mood. Of course you are worried about your safety, but don't snap at the people that are trying to help and make you feel better Sad

That wasn't really serious, it was kind of an indirect proposition here. Unrealistic one but yeah, bad joke

Yes one thjing PO members can pride themselves on to a fault, is the ability to try and lighten things after a tense situation. I dunno if it was good timing, but you'll see it's generally for giggles Cool
