I would like to make a note that I hope is non-inflammatory.

When dealing with women and men, a compliment to one is a sexist remark to another. Admittedly, the double standard exists that "boys will be boys" about the matter. I suppose it depends on context and the mood of the person on the receiving end. If a gent has has nothing but compliments, dates, and good results out of "sexist" remarks, it's going to be very hard to break him of that, because they've been compliments to him for a long time. And if a girl likes having people compliment her on her sexiness, even in crude ways, and without crossing the line into unwanted contact, then while it still may be sexist, it's a compliment to her.

Might be a good remark to guys if the girls started cat-calling the ones they liked. How would the guys take it?

Lastly, Satine - teaching is an underrespected position. You earn my respect for sticking with it. And if someone talks over you again, throw them out until they can learn proper manners.
