The DS Lite will definitely have the GBA slot, so I wouldn't worry about it getting dropped. I heard something about the fact that it's powered by the ARM-7 processor anyway. Nintendo themselves have announced it's still supported. |

Of course. Asthetic design is an important part of things. Whether it's functionality or form that comes first, eventually, things do need to look pretty to attract their market. |

Slimmed-down version of Nintendo's handheld will come in ice- and navy blue as well as white; GBA compatibility confirmed.

TOKYO--Nintendo today announced that the DS Lite will be released in three color models on its Japanese debut on March 2. The handheld will be available in "Crystal White," "Ice Blue," and "Enamel Navy," and sell for 16,800 yen ($142)--1,800 yen ($15) more than the original DS.
Together with the announcement, Nintendo revealed additional details about the DS Lite. First and foremost, it confirmed once and for all DS Lite can play Game Boy Advance games, and its cartridge slot will located at the same bottom rim of the handheld as the original DS. However, Nintendo notes that GBA cartridges will stick out by one centimeter when they're inserted to the DS Lite, due to the smaller form factor. The DS's card slot and power cord socket will be located in the same places as before, while the power switch and stylus holder have been relocated to the right edge of the handheld.
The DS Lite will come with four adjustable levels of screen brightness, with the maximum setting being five times as luminous as the original DS's. Battery life has also been improved. The original DS ran 6 to 10 hours on a full recharge, and the DS Lite runs for about the same number of hours on its maximum brightness. The new model can run 15 to 19 hours on its lowest brightness, 10 to 15 hours on its second level of brightness, 7 to 11 hours on its third level, and 5 to 8 hours on the maximum level. What's more, the DS Lite's battery recharges in three hours, which is an hour less than the original DS.
As previously reported, the DS Lite's body thickness has been reduced by a third (when folded), and it features a 20 percent weight reduction from 275 grams to 218 grams. The screen size remains unaffected, and both the top and bottom panels use 3 inch LCDs. The original DS used semi-transmissive LCDs for its two panels, but the DS Lite will use transmissive LCDs, which allows for higher levels of brightness.
The DS Lite will come with a new AC adapter that is not compatible with other Nintendo handhelds, including both the original DS and Game Boy Micro. There will be two styluses bundled with the DS Lite, and they'll come in the same body color as the handheld. The styluses will be one centimeter longer and one millimeter thicker than those included with the original DS. The DS Lite will also be bundled with a carrying strap, and a plastic dust cover that can snap into the GBA slot when empty.

Well it seems to me the DSL is an improvement over the original in every case. It begs the question: Why did you buy the original? If the featurs still fit you then don't change and if you wanted the original then don't change. I have an original model NES, two base model Genesis', one base Sega CD, two base Saturns, one base Playstation, and my base PS2. I have never seen the need to buy newer redesigns simply because they exist. Now I'll adm,it that home consoles differ ion that department than portables because the portability factor (size) is the only real major factor to consider but still. I can't understand getting a new system simply because it exists.
Well I should also add that all of my systems still work fine. I'm proud of that.
I have changed GBs all the way from the original to the SP but I skipped the GBPocket because it was not (enough of) an improvement. That and I also only change GBs when mine dies/gets lost/gets donated. I'll get a DSL when the price is right (through reduction or promo) but with no GBA multiplay, it still kinda sucks. Had it been 100% compatible I would have bought one already.
And curiously enough as I write this I hear my local vid store is doing a promo: buy a console and get 24 free rentals. At $5-6 a pop that makes the system damn near free. I wish they would have waited for the DSL tho. Hmmm... |

The size factor is the main issue for me.
I won't buy it right away, but the case that I have I use for my DS and my PSP, and I literally have to squeeze the DS into it.
The DS Lite would slide right in.
I don't know... we'll have to wait and see. |

Well the other thing is that it's electronics. There will be a revision within 6 months regardless of what the hell you buy. It appears only Televisions are exempt from this. You might say the PSP hasn't changed but how many firmware updates has it gotten already with how many more planned in the immediate future? One of my problems with that is that not everyone can always get online to download the upgrades so they just get screwed. New Halo maps? What if I purchased an XBox and Halo game but don't have broadband (which I don't)? Then I get screwed of downloadable content simply because I don't fit into a company's demographic. I surely fit in when I gave up my money so I should be supported. That situation sucks.
Bringing it back to point tho, I don't fault Nin for releasing so many damn GBs. Most are simply case mods so if you buy it, it's for personal preference not need. The different hardware models have always been actual advances. No other company/system can say that. Also I'm a loyal fellow. If it doesn't screw me over, I see no need to discard it frivolously.
I mean, you don't ditch your girlfriend just because you see a girl with longer hair, do you? |

Yeah I'm not faulting Nintendo at all. I know why they are doing it. And it's smart.
But the question is... what is the difference between GB sales and GB installed base. |

Well I'll go with what I think you're shooting at here...GB sales far outweigh GB's installed base. Assuming that "GB" represents the entire GameBoy line (from clunky grey to SP) then clearly there's no way the installed base (meaning total active machines today) can match the sales. Time passes and things break/die. That's the best PR report Nin can ever put out, comparing the GB sales to anything. I doubt any other game family will ever match it tho if Sony hangs onto the Playstation name through PS4 they may challenge it. I sincerely do believe that the GB Micro will be the last GB. |

I agree with all of your points.
The worst part is that it will be hard for me to resist getting a DSLite at one point or another just b/c of how much I hate how snug my DS fits in my case.
Sad... isn't it. |
