I think the gov. went about the issue in the wrong way. No, a government shouldn't be able to tell you what you can or can't eat. However, they could have made the manner in which the animal is raised and the "delicacy" is cultured illegal in favor of a more humane method of obtaining a diseased goose liver, if one exists. Who the heck eats diseased liver anyway?! Blech!!!
As far as the commercial raising of other types of animals for food goes it's a disturbing and very shakey balance between economics and morality. I agree with Scrum that the raising of cattle on a smaller scale where they could be better cared for untill the time of their "processing" is more humane. It also makes for less fatty beef! However, more farms, more time and money spent caring for the animal the more expensive the product. The cost of beef would go up considerably. Probably not as much as gas though. I'm not at all trying to justify the way these animals are made to live. Anyone who eats meat will tell you that free range chicken or beef is far superior to any other kind! For those of you that don't know, free range meat is from animals that roam around and eat what is naturally available to them, not just forcefed proteins and kept in a pen.
P.S. "A Modest Proposal", I love reading that! I acctually got a B on an essay that I had to write in high school about wether I agreed or disagreed with "A Modest Proposal. I wrote that I thought it was a great idea (sarcastically of course)! And, whereas she said it was well written, she couldn't bring herself to put an A on something that basically condoned cannibalism! Still, I had a good laugh! |

I kind of agree. Maybe they should have just outlawed the method, to uphold democracy or whatever. But on a side note, synthetic meats have come a long way in the last ten years. I'm sure they could synthetically make something that tasted and had the same texture as Foie Grois.

Actually, you have to be really careful about "free range" products. While the Department of Agriculture requires that animals have access to the outdoors in order to obtain free range certification for meat (which could just mean that animals get a few hours to themselves in a pasture every day), they don't have the same rule for eggs. So some farmers call their eggs "free range" because the chicken cage is slightly bigger than normal >.>
USDA Certified Organic products, however, have more strict rules about certification. In order for to be certified organic, you have to be inspected on a regular basis and keep insanely clean records of proof that the animals haven't had contact with growth hormones or chemicals.
But make sure, if you buy organic products, that they have the USDA seal on them--it's not illegal to call your product organic, even if it isn't, but only USDA certified organic products can display the seal.
And from what I've heard, organic/free range meats are supposed to be really good. !

*wiggles* You still should've gotten an A. Teachers are supposed to be unbiased about the subject matter! ...like that ever happens. All basic level courses just want regurgitation. *grar, off topic*
Isn't animal cruelty illegal? They should nail those idiots for that. |
