We also do it because of physics. We can slow down and make sure that there isn't any traffic coming without losing much momentum, wheras if we stopped at every single sign/light we would have to rebuild all of the momentum we had. So while if there is traffic at the other stops, or traffic at lights, I always stop, but if there's nobody there, I go (except at red lights, which will usually give me a green or somebody in a car will come up behind me and set of the sensor). |
Yeah we do that with cars too, it kills your mileage haveing to stop and start all the time, I sure wish I could disregard the light and just go on through when there arn't people comeing through the intersection I would get like 5-6 more mpg.
I am pretty much with ming, maybe its just the areas we live but its mostly the same thing.
I respect people on bikes hell I even enjoy a good ride myself....but see my job is about 10 miles from my house and my college is about 30 miles from my house. and I have been made late because of a cyclists holier than thou attitudes.
It can be pretty iritating when you get stuck behind a bike going like 10 mph when the speed limet is 5 times that. Sometimes I have places i have to be, and I can't afford to get the 5 times slower than normal.
Use the fucking sidewalks and bike lanes if they are there, thats all I ask.
Don't worry scrum I am sure your one of the good ones
this topic just kinda brought out my agnst twords the stereotypical biker lol (which is what I see 80-90% of the time) |

Riva - I lost a cyclist friend to a truck when I was 16. In my case, it was unfortunately almost entirely his fault (the truck had no lights on at night, but my friend was cycling through a crosswalk without reflectors and running a red light at the same time), and further cemented in my mind the fact that cyclists need to understand that their privileges in traffic situations are just that, privileges. Same as with any operator of any vehicle - while you may technically be allowed to act in a certain way, when doing so puts yourself or others at risk, there are times when right-of-way should be yielded for short-term survival. With the way people drive near where I live, I find myself yielding a clearly-held right-of-way due to the dangers inherent in attempting to take it from someone who refuses to respect it. I figure pushing it just because you can is reckless - seriously, what good's the high road when you're dead? |
I completely agree with you, I'm not saying cyclists and bikers should always use their advantages, as in all cases, you take safety as a priority, if it doesnt look safe toh ead to the front of the line, then stay where you are. Bikerss are a little more respectful of traffic laws in this country (going by what some of you guys have said), well the proper bikers anyway, but the kids who get a moped as soon as their sixteen to be like their friends and tend to race through the streets on their converted hair dryers give anybody on any sort of motorcyle a bad name, same goes for the chavs you see on BMX bikes in the UK who are only riding that particular bike because its currently cool to do so, they ride one-handed, on the pavement with music blaring out of their phones weaving all over the place, and give you threatening gestures if you're in their way. Then they use Pelican crossings to get across the road, but ignore the "Red Man, Green Man" system and cross when they feel like it (usually after toking up or when they've finished texting their chavvy girlfriend) |

The chavs are ignoring the Green Cross Code?
David Prowse is not amused. |

The chavs ignore everything, unless you look at them the "wrong way" i.e. at all... |

Do they still line up on the streetcorners hoping to get a whiff of Burberry plaid?
David Prowse is still not bloody well amused. |
