Since no one seems to be answering...MY nutrition goals (and I would venture to say a lot of people here as well) are to know what ingredients aid in weight loss. |

Hmm... that's a tough one. See, weight loss isn't really a magic-pill kinda thing, it's a balance of eating right and exercise. The basic premise is this: In order to lose weight you need to burn more than you're consuming, calorie-wise. Now, some people go for the whole Eat-Less approach, which can work, but it doesn't do much for you physically. You're basically tired all the time and hungry, because you're going under your body's caloric level. The other way (the way I like) is you burn more, that means exercise.
Oops, gotta run, more on this later!

<3 Sperrit-san, my love, what sort of smoothie options are there for those of us who can't have raw fruit/veggies? I'm trying to eat healthier, but cooking fruit and veggies takes forever and gets rid of a lot of the nutrients, so it seems almost like a self-defeating thing, y'know? If there are other options that don't taste like grass, though, I'd love to know them.
Note: I definitely do not, as I'm sure you remember, need to lose weight. I need to gain it if anything, but I'm really much more concerned about making my body healthier so that when I -do- reach the point where my metabolism gives out in a few years, I might be able to maintain something similar to the weight I have now simply by having the good practices already in place.
...Exercise is forthcoming, but to be honest I'm awful about remembering to transfer my Tai Chi DVD from one location to the other given I live at my parents' house during weekdays and Shino-sama's on the weekends. It's almost like being a divorcee child. xD |

Ooh, Shan! Maybe I could get in on that Tai Chi goodness? I'd love to do 30 minutes to an hour of Tai Chi, then go to Starbucks for some Chai Tea!
^_^
Speritt - DUDE!! Hook us up with all smoothies!! Hehe, I'm down for as many different health drinks as possible. Like many others I'm aiming at losing weight around the mid-region, but I think that any and all smoothie goodness that promotes a healthy lifestyle should be covered

Well, as it is I'm not very good at remembering to -do- the Tai Chi. My ultimate goal is to do that first thing every morning. The morning routine they have on there doesn't take all that long, probably ten-twenty minutes, but it's better than noting. xD
Still, I'm so grouchy when I get up all I want to do is laze about. xD So it's hard to motivate myself to get into the habit. |

*snicker* I shouldn't be laughing, but I can't help it.
Anyways, I was never a huge fan of smoothies (nothing against you, smoothie-maker-dear). I much prefer eating my food and drinking my water seperately. It would be interesting to know what sort of ingredients you were putting in those, as I could probably use them in cooking. I call upon your unfathomable knowledge. ^^
I want to mention something about exercise. There is no such thing as spot-reducing (unless of course you have no muscle at all in a particular area and it doesn't burn any calories as you workout and you suddenly have a huge muscle there) for any region. It's all really a combination of body fat % and genes. However, there is no underestimating the power of strength-training to build shape and tone. I encourage those of you interested to start lifting (few reps, high weight for strength training, many reps and a low weight for more of a cardio workout that promotes more endurance in the muscles) weights and such, because it really is a help during cardio that extra amount of calories you are able to burn, and you'll be keeping your muscles nice and happy. Also when you're losing weight, utilizing strength will make the body more toned, as muscle is being added on the places that fat used to be. There is also no need for women to worry about becoming "bulky." If it's in your genes, it's in your genes, but for the vast majority of women they will not gain unattractive amounts of muscle unless you eat so much protein that tofu is coming out your ears. Yay for strong women. ^^
I might be preaching to the choir though. o.o I'm just essited for PO. ^^ |

Glad you're so exxited Akanari
I totally agree with you on spot-reducing exercise, it's a myth. However, for slimming down, you DON'T want to use the isolate technique (wherein you only work on one muscle per exercise) this will cause that particular muscle to grow large, no doubt, but you want multiple muscles to grow. More muscles that grow=more fat will burn.

For those of you interested in Tai Chi I could direct you to a good instructor...sometimes going to a class is easier than trying to motivate yourself on your own time...of course you'd have to have time for the class. Plus I'm not sure where it would be (in atlant somewhere, I think near midtown) since the kung-fu school has moved while I was here in Japan. But I can always email my kung-fu instructor and let you guys know if you liek...
PS:
I was under the impression that very often, particularly the smaller you already are...working out often makes you gain weight since muscle weighs more than fat... |

I use the term lose weight loosely. I really mean lower your body fat %. |

Zinka-- You'd also have to have money for an official class like that, which I don't, as I am one of those unfortunate few that can't hold a job while in school.
I do plan on taking official karate classes once I graduate and work and stuff, but for now this is about all I can do. <3 |
