In reality, this would be the final nail in the coffin of this little "war" with Blu-ray the clear victor, but Toshiba and Paramount inking that $150M deal for the 18 months of HDDVD exclusivity has just extended it that much longer and more so confusing the consumer.

Likewise could be said for Warner inking a deal with Blu Ray. It works both ways. But if you are inclined towards one over the other it's easy to make it work in favor of the "fair haired child."

I'm with the Pup.

I'll gladly lap up the digital format when it becomes as readily available as MP3's are to music.

Meanwhile - I'll not be feeding the illusionary cycle that I NEED to have the latest and greatest to be sure I keep up with the Joneses. I understand the desire for quality but I also don't like being treated like an idiot.

I myself only have one Blue Ray movie I think.

And That's Kung-Fu Hustle cause it was $15 and I didn't own a copy.

I'm still considering getting Blade Runner on Blu Ray just cause I saw it for my first time ever and fell in love. I don't wanna mar it by going to DVD. hehehe

I'm not for upgrading any of my movies to blu-ray cause that seems dumb my DVD's are permanent facets and they would cost WAY too much to replace.

I will NEVER switch to all digital content because it makes no sense to me...Why DL a movie just to burn it to DVD for the same cost as going to Best Buy and picking up a copy. Plus I've seen Hard drives crash I basically DL 4 GB's of stuff and transfer it to DVD Immediately.

Also say you get a digital distributer...Lets say Netflix goes Digital buying of movies...What happens when Net Flix tanks? Do you lose all the content you purchased and never DL'd but just kept on their hard drives to DL later? IE Xbox Live, PSN where if you format your HD you can DL your games again since you paid for em.

Plus I like the idea of going to a shelf and seeing all the DVD's I own and picking one instead of turning my computer on and scanning file folders for a movie to watch.

There's several differences.
The largest is that there was no money exchanged. Warner decided to go Blu b/c it's selling better and is the superior format.

Toshiba bought exclusivity from Paramount.

As I said, I still don't see this has being feasible in the near future. The bandwidth isn't there. The biggest issue is "readily available." Even standard 480p quality you're looking at up to 9G of a download. Maybe more (LOTR for instance). Then if you move to HD, even just to 720p... it close to doubles. Then if you want to go to 1080p...

I still think that the DVD will hold strong for several years. But DVD and HD disc format are not necessarily mutually exclusive. I see both of them existing for at least another 4 to 5 years or so.

Uhm your wrong on the file size there home slice. Digital Downloaded movies will be smaller than content thats on DVDs because it only has one video/audio track as opposed to the extras on a DVD and as well as extras. The 720p XBL download of 300 is only 5.9gb

Oh... "only."

So on my 5Mb connection... at close to it's best, it would take me 3 hours 15 minutes to download.

Enough for me to Drive up to Blockbuster, rent it, come home, watch it, drive back to Blockbuster, return it, and come home.
Nice.

It's also compressed more using Xbox Live movies. They clock in at 6.8 Mbps whereas HD movie formats go as high as 20Mbps for 720p movies and 45Mbps for 1080p movies.

Not to mention the uncompressed sound of Blu-Ray. Wink

Well I download complete movies now in less than 24 hrs (some, like Saw 4, in as little as 2 hours depending on uploader quantity/bandwidth) and watch them the next day. I'm not upset at that all. Tomorrow for free beats today for pay. Even tho I do have an unlimited account at Hollywood Video which means I get unlimited movies I want for just $15 a month anyway. I keep my DLs more to HDTV and BluRay stuff, then convert them.

That being said, there is some more good news for Sony in this whole debacle:

New Line Cinema confirmed that they will move to Blu-ray exclusive support and no longer support HD DVD. In addition, Times Online reported that Paramount and 20 other media companies are preparing to remove their names from the HD-DVD alliance and move to Blu-ray.

I think the New Line move excite/upset me more than Paramount's but that's just me.

It won't be until I put a Blu-Ray or HD DVD drive in my computer that I'll take one side over the other, til then DVD is good enough for me.

Yeah but what's the bitrate and rez on them.

I just don't think the bandwidth is there for HD movies via download YET. It will get there, but for now, I think disc media is still the way to go.

I mean... look at music. the mp3 scene is huge! But people STILL buy CDs.

And thank God they do, so I can DL them!

Seriously, I do support companies that I personally feel are doing quality work but that's simply my opinions. I've paid for every Pokemon game I own tho I could DL them. I also bought the 2K sports games ($20 and $50 versions) and more recently, Fire Pro Wrestling for my PS2 as well as Pirates Of The Caribbean 3 (My girl has to have all the originals of Star Wars and Pirates, she loves Darth and Depp more than she does me). It's just my feelings on this so I won't start a long rant.

More shots at HD DVD...
HBO this time around.

Merely days after hearing New Line affirm that it would indeed be following Warner Bros. to the Blu side, we're now seeing confirmation that HBO (owned by Time Warner, which also owns Engadget's parent companies) will be making the same leap. According to reports, HBO Video president Henry McGee has stated that HBO will too be "following the same policy as Warner Home Video" -- though we can't really imagine anyone being shocked about the decision. The blows just keep on comin', eh?

The final nail?

Universal is said to have opted out of it's exclusivity deal.

Report: Universal opts out of HD DVD exclusivity
Variety says major Toshiba high-def video player supporter will not renew its sole support of the format when it expires in May.

. . .

Variety reports that Universal Studios has ended its HD DVD exclusivity deal, though it will continue to only support the format until its current arrangement with Toshiba ends May 31. The report did not indicate whether Universal will exclusively support Sony's Blu-ray format after that date. Speaking to GameSpot, a Universal Studios representative confirmed that, for the time being, the studio will continue to support HD DVD, though they would not say whether Blu-ray support is also on the agenda.

Sony's Blu-ray high-def video player, which is prominently advertised as one of the primary draws of the PlayStation 3, enjoys the lion's share of support from major motion picture studios. In addition to Warner Bros., the Walt Disney Company, 20th Century Fox, and Lionsgate all support the format exclusively. New Line Cinema and HBO, both subsidiaries of Time Warner, also reportedly revealed during the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show that they would follow Warner Bros. as Blu-ray exclusive studios.
