I used to like the shows alot, cuz back then I had no idea what anime was anyway, so I had to choose something.

I still do like some American cartoons.

Such as:

Dexter
Ed, Edd, and Eddy
South Park

you know, stuff I don't have to think about

You win major points for liking Ed, Edd and Eddy. That show is awesome. It takes the best elements from Calvin and Hobbes, Dennis the Menace and the Three Stooges and rolls them all into one. PURE GENIUS.

Anyway, I totally get what you're saying about Jerry. I've seen a lot of the shows, myself, and they almost always start with Jerry as the first motivation force. Now, that isn't to say that Jerry's always a jerk. Sometimes it's that he wants some food and has to get past Tom to get to it. In this instance, though, you can still feel sorry for Tom because he's just doing his job. Why can't Jerry go forage for berries outside? Why can't he go through the trash? He's a mouse, it's not like his standards are high. I'd say that a good third of the cartoons start out like that.
Then there are the situations where it's really just a missunderstanding. For example: Jerry's on the beach, chill'n, and Tom comes up and takes his spot, throws a blanket over him or something like that. Naturally, Jerry fights back. However, that isn't to say that they can't share the spot. Jerry's violent reaction to a simple unintentional invasion of his space is way out of proportion. I mean, he's a mouse, he's hard to see. Tom probably didn't mean to upset him, he just couldn't see the little guy. A third start out like that.
Then there are the kind that you mentioned, which comprize the other third, and you can bet how shocked I was when I finally figured these ones out. There are plenty of examples of Jerry just being a plain jerk to Tom. It's terrible!
The conclussion? Tom and Jerry is a study in the worst social values I have ever seen. Sure it might be funny, but don't you think that little kids, watching these things, might pick up on some of this stuff? It just ain't right.

Oh my gosh you guys are killing me. It's purely intellectual humor out of the Looney Tunes, Tom and jerry, Beany and Cecil. Everything I was raised on! ~le sigh~

To each their own. I attribute and applaud those cartoons for my warped sense of humor and MANY of the cartoon makers grew up on those cartoons and were influenced by such things. To be genius of the times to appeal to both young and old, very tongue in cheek cartoons like that could not be made today and for the standard they set. Of course you are going to have gems of today such as PPG which appeals to the older crowd as it references pop culture of the older crowds not so distant yesteryear or Dexter but then again they are made by the same pure genius.

As for Ed Edd and Eddy, can't agree with the idea that the cartoon is all that superb. Not a big fan of the shakey animation. Some of the shows are decent but overall just plain bleh. Of course you are going to have great animations such as the Simpsons, Family Guy and one of my personal favorites Aqua Teen Hunger Force because they target the same warped minds that grew up on Tex Avery, Bob Clampett and Chuck Jones.

~huff huff~ I guess I gotta stand up for my childhood and adulthood favorites. They are becoming ore and more chastised as the years go on because they AREN'T anime.

I have no problem with any of those shows, Doot. They happen to be some of my favorites. Looney Toons, Tom and Jerry, etc. These are all great, classic shows that have plenty of redeeming values, mostly in humor. They offer a straightforward view of simple things, adding new delightful twists along the way. I'd be the last person to say that they weren't brilliant cartoon making.
In the same sense I would agree that Family Guy, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, most all the Sunday night Adult Swim originals, have the same creative drive. They, like Looney Toons, Tex Avery and Tom and Jerry are pushing the bar of acceptable humor and creating new borders for creative cartooning. In the same way I admire the creations of Genndy Tarakofsky. His best works are an amazing mix of old and new styles that appeals to audiences across the board. In some ways I'd consider him a good filmmaker rather than a good cartoonist. Simpons and PPG, however, I really can't get behind. While both of them had their days in the sun they quickly became tame, relying on shallower themes and gags in order to garner attention, falling back into old ways instead of continuing to push the bar. The new Dexter's Labs have the same problem, falling into mediocrity after a long run of innovation.
I admire Ed, Edd and Eddy for the same reasons that I admire Tarakofsky's work. I think they're a great mix of old and new styles with influences from some of my favorite works. Johnny Two-by-Four's relationship with his imaginary friend Plank is a clear influence of Calvin and Hobbes, the unclear issue of whether or not Plank is actually alive mirroring the childhood make-believe that we all shared in. The Kankers represent that insecurity we all had toward the opposite sex as we became of age, that teasing/flirting relationship that was so unsure. Their ability to take cardboard boxes, garbage cans and springs to make incredable, impossible inventions shows us the investment we all had in imagination. Kevin, the neighborhood bully that, no matter what we did, was always hiding in the background. Naz, the girl next door that we liked before we even knew what that meant. The threesome of Ed, Edd and Eddy themselves as a clear Mo, Lary and Curly relationship that ties the whole show together. The simple innocence of those childhood summers where time seemed to drag on forever and we always had something new to do. The invisable, yet ever present influence of the grown-ups that is pure Peanuts. Yeah, not all of their episodes will make you pee your pants. If you're into crude humor then probably none of them will. Yet even without that the show holds a fascination for me as a tribute to those childhood memories that I still cherish, those shows and cartoons that I loved.
But, each to his own. Wink

By the way, Excel, you really ought to have known better than to bring up the subject of cartoons in a place like this. Very Happy

Tom & Jerry:
Awesome, love it, always loved it, agree with Doot about censorship of the cartoon.

Cartoon Network:
Some of their cartoons rawk.
PPG, Dexter, Justice League, Teen Titans
Some of their cartoons suck.
Johnny Bravo, Ed, Edd, and Eddy and worst of all... Cow and Chicken!
Then there is Adult Swim
Aqua Teen Hunger Force is awesome!

Considering just about all I watch is cartoons... if there is nothign on TV, CN is on. Anyway, Tom and Jerry is one of the greatest cartoons known to man.

Saying you think Jerry is a jerk is like saying you think the Road Runner is a Jerk, or Tweety, or Bugs even when he is getting chased by Elmer, Sam, Taz or even Wil E. Even Daffy duck could be put in this category. And since we are on it... if Jerry is a jerk, aren't Bugs and Daffy major jerks to eachother everytime they are in the same clip!

Consistancy!

You can't seriously believe that the guy who made the Simpsons, Family Guy, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force grew up on those Shitty Tex Avery cartoons? I hated them when I was a kid...Course Tex Avery was later all created in France and we KNOW how much I like them...They liked Jerry Lewis for craps sake!

Don't get me started on Hanna Barbera (Before they Did swat cats but after they did Johnny Quest) But HB did do a lotta cool stuff...But I still hate Yogi.

As for warped sense of humor I like to think it developed from the same place Jhonen Vasquez's did..A VIVID imagination and a hint of paranoid psychosis and NOT someone elses doings.

Bah, we're arguing about cartoons for chrissakes!

I actually attribute it to my imagination and a warped family.

I can't say an entirely warped family but my dad and uncles are as sarcastic as they come and have bestowed in me the ability to say sarcastic things SO realistically people get offended..It's great.

Man i dunno what to say. Maybe it was my fault for not starting the conversation probably. So lemme re-state

This entire thread was meant to be taken in light. I love the cartoons and I am not an anime fascist. I love anime but I still hold many cartoons dear. Tom and Jerry happens to be one of my favorites as far as American cartoons go. All I was getting at is that Jerry is almost always the instigator. For all everyone knows that could be what I dig about the show.

If I really made that big a deal well all I can say is sorry, it was only my intention to start a simple surface conversation.

:Sighs:
