You could try carrying a lot of your books. And leaving some in your car, if you drive. *nodme* that's what I did a lot. |

You could also try getting a high-tech hiking backpack, such as something from the North Face or EMS. They usually have waist belts and sternum straps. If you wear a bag PROPERLY, there should be no reason to have back problems. Actually, this is a problem MANY people have...they just don't wear their backpacks properly. The more you tighten the straps once they're on your back, the less pull you'll feel on your back. Also, if you get a bag such as I suggested above, you can put in the waist belt and sternum strap, tighten them and the shoulder straps, and a good portion of the weight is taken off your back and distributed throughout your body, like on your legs and waist. I can fill my North Face bag to the breaking point (really heavy), strap it up really tightly, and ride on the train going home, over an hour, standing up, with minimal discomfort. They usually cost a bit more, but they really do work. |

I had a locker in HS, but I never used it. It was way out in BFE locker land. So everytime I made a locker trip, i was late for class. What i ended up doing was either asking to stash one of my books in a friend's locker who was closer to my class, enquiring from a classmate (who had the class the day before) whether the book was necessary, or just dealing with the weight and going on with it. My bag usually weighed about 25-30 pounds on an average. It was so heavy that my straps broke on it and i'd have to replace it about every 6 weeks to semester. But it was my "choice not to be tardy to class," according to my principal. |

im with Ming. Get a bag with a waist and sternum strap, and you should be good. They are, like he said, more expensive, but better than the stupid Rolling bags.
For example, my best friend had developing Skulliosis, and instead of using the rolling bag and less stuff, he carried just as much, tightened his backpack, and used his waist strap / sternum strap. He's fine now, and never has a problem
Also, the damn rollers always get in teh way and clip you in the legs!

Rolling backpacks are evil. Yeah, if you have back problems I can see why you'd use them. But if you don't, just don't.
The halls in my school are packed with slow-moving people. I can't stand slow people in general, as I've only got 5 minutes to dash across campus. And the rolling backpacks just take up more space, and I always trip on them.
I too had a sore back with a regular backpack, but I switched to a messenger bag and it's gotten much better. It's a nice L.L.Bean one with a squishy padded strap, and it holds a hell of a lot more than a regular backpack. And I do use my locker pretty regularly to drop my books off. |
