Yeah, if only I didn't live so far from Portland, that would be the first thing that would have crossed my mind! Lackage of money is a bit of a problem here X_x. BUT all I need is to be fed and I should be happy with that! ^^; Still ... why is Portland so far from Montreal!? >_> Ah well ...

I know this sounds sort of silly, but when I was a freshman in college I went to school in Bronx, NY and taking the subway back at night by myself was a little scary so I did a few things so people wouldn't bother me and it really worked....here are a few suggestions...
1. I carried a swiss army knife with me, not that I would have ever done anything with it, but it made me feel safe. (Those are pretty non expersive)

2. If you're alone act like you're the craziest person around. When I was on the subway I use to rock back and forth and mutter stuff to myself and people thought I was crazy!

3. Talking to others on the cell phone for the most part makes me feel more comfortable by myself.

It seems like you have a good head on your shoulders. Good Luck to you! Very Happy

I actually lived in Brooklyn for a while =D And what's weird is that I didn't feel as nervous about walking around at night. I think the major difference was that there were ALWAYS people around, at least on the routes I took. (and I always knew that if I got lost, just find a subway and get on the F train to Bergen, or get on a train that led to somewhere where I could get on the F. I don't exactly have that comfort here--Portland has buses and street cars, but the system is more complicated than the NYC subway). Plus, I knew people in NYC. I don't really know anyone here x_x

But thank you for the suggestions. I don't think I will carry a knife, but pepper spray sounds like fun =D And there are plenty of crazy people in Portland o.O If it comes down to it, I could try that XD!

Thanks again, and luck to you as well =)

Another suggestion: there is a self-defense technique called RADS (Rape Aggression Defense System), and it's exclusively for women. It works with your natural fight-or-flight response to defeat an attacker. The Loyola Police Dept. offered the courses for free, but New Orleans was attacked by Hurricane Katrina before the next one was offered so I haven't taken it yet. However, RADS was HIGHLY recommended by campus police. I would search around to see if anybody offers it in your area.

I searched, but I couldn't find anything =( Thank you for the suggestion though; maybe I can ask the local police if they have something like it.

Asking the police is a very good idea! I do it all the time when it comes to things like that, well ... back when I was with my xgf, I'd go there to know how to act with stalkers, and there was that one guy that tried getting her to get ''somewhere nice he said'' one time ... she didn't know how to react, well I knew how I'D react if I saw that guy, and I also knew it would have got me into more trouble then what the guy actually did or wanted to do. So I stoped by and ask for tips for me and my x on how to deal with these sorts of things! We live in a society where if the victims defend themselves against an attacker and the attacker ends up being in a nastier state then the victim ... well it's the victim who'll pay the price! Of course it's not always the case but ... what I'm trying to say is just that it's not as easy as it might sound to say ''o, t'was self-defence!''.

For exemple ... say someone would empty a barrel of .40 bullets in your direction but O MY NEO! You dodged them all ... and you ended your sequence with a neck breaking ' ' upper ''tiger-punch'' cut ' ' on the guy's chin ... and he dies. Well, since you ''weren't harmed AND there is no proof that he really wanted to kill you SINCE YOU HAVE NO BULLET HOLES IN YOUR BODY'' well you could end up doing some time for such ''self-defence'' act. It's likely not the same for every country/states but it's pretty wicked down there as far as I know (haha and I know more about the dos and don'ts of the US of A then of the CANA of DA ... that makes no sence Nuts )

But yeeeaaah it was an exagerated and very unlikely exemple, but still.
