Ok, that explains a lot. I had a good idea about what the realms were, but I was confused because I'm playing in a normal one, and I noticed some people marked as PvP. So I'm assuming that you turn that on to actually fight other people? And if that's on, can you just randomly attack anyone that has PvP turned on? Or do you have to challenge them first?

/pvp turns it on
/pvp turns it off, which it will go back to non-pvp after 5 mins of non-pvp action
PVP can also get turned on by buffing or healing a PVP flagged character, or some NPCs so be careful about doing that as well, on top of just attacking someone already pvp flagged to begin with. If you dont want to run risk of getting jumped, dont assist if you see someone flagged getting jumped, but if you want to have a little fun, then go for it hehe.
Also if you do become PVP flagged by assisting someone or even fighting someone directly, once you do not engage in any pvp activity it will turn off automatically after 5 mins, you do not need to /pvp to disengage it. Only time you NEED to /pvp to turn it off is if you /pvp to turn it on. Even if you enter battlegrounds to pvp, you will be automatically flagged pvp upon entering and it will go off after 5 mins after leaving the battleground, but will remain on the entire time you are in the battleground.

Actually, discussions got to the point where I missed a lot of stuff. Sorry bout that Ultra! Actually, maybe you can answer me this...in PVP (and more importantly when you are PVP flagged in PVE), can you attack people of the same faction? Or can Alliance only attack Horde, and vice versa?
Also, I'm thinking of starting a Horde character soon. Any suggestions as to what server? I think I'm still going to stay PVE for now... |

Alliance can only attack horde and vice versa. You can challenge some of the same faction to a duel, however, but only outside of the major cities. |

Actually the only time you can fight your own side as well as the opposing side, outside of duels, is the Arena's.
Arena as in the one located in Stranglethorn Vale and Dire Maul.
There is Arena PVP (similar set up to Battlegrounds) that you can queue up for an battle anyone else who is queued up, alliance and horde alike, faction doesnt matter in there. |

I must admit I am guilty of not really carring much about the story, I usually skim enough of the quest to understand what to do for the quest. I do enjoy it a lil more now that BC is out.
Like they said though, the hard core players are spread out all over the place, My main is currently a lvl 64 dwarf rogue on Black Dragonflight.
