Just a quick question, are the originators of these quiz games trying to stump people, or is it a contest among the players? I think I saw one of ansect's movie pics the other day and it was completely black except for a dim light in the middle and some indistinguishable blue object. Are you really expecting anyone to guess that? It seems like the same with the vg quiz thread and the newly created movie quote quiz thread. These are great ideas, and I'd LOVE to play, but if every single one is going to be obscure as hell, it's not going to be worth my time. Just a hint, if you have to post more than 3 images from the movie/game, chances are you're being a BIT too obscure. I can understand a challenge, but it's getting ridiculous. I propose that after 3 images if no one has guessed, YOU get a point for stumping us and move onto the next movie (if your goal is to stump us.) If your goal is to create a competetive game for everyone to jump in on, you may want to stop showing helicoptor shots of big cities and expect someone to get it right off the bat. Just my two cents, I don't know what the "real" object of the games are.

I think he was just trying to up the difficulty; there were a lot of times when people would guess it right off the bat. So when people have proven they can beat one level of difficulty, move up to another ^_^
(although I'm horrible at the game and would consider myself on the first level !) |

If the game was easy no one would play because there would be no challenge to it. Its like Duke Nukem.. yes it is fun to put on God Mode and rampage around shooting everything up in site, but in the end you really didn't accomplish $!^^. You just proved you can make a game really easy. Most of the images that have gone up are movies that I know personally Ive seen and kick myself for not guessing early because of the oscuringness of the images. And then there are others that the first time I see them I know exactly what movie they are. If you want a game that is easy and un exciting to play you should try Duck Hunt for NES and hold the gun in the bottom center of the screen pointed up. Everytime you shoot you kill a duck because the laser site is hitting the entire screen.
Learn to enjoy a little challenge in your life. In the end it makes you a better person. Having everything a push over wont help you out when you get into a real chalenging situation and your popping advil to keep the migrains away while your searching google to find a cheat for life.
I do appologize for the above before you take it the wrong way. But things being easy in life is one of my pet peaves.
Sincerely,
Hoth |

I agree the first images are obscure. There is a reason for that. There are only so many movies, only so much time and so many different types of people that play the game.
Gathering images requires that:
A. I have possession of a DVD.
B. I have time to take shots from the movie
At this time we have gone through almost 150 movies in the thread I started. Ranging from the 1950s to new releases covering all genres.
With my game you are not really supposed to recognize the movies from the first image. The people who are on top will look at the first image and make a couple of guesses. They look at a couple of images and figure out what movies have these scenes in them.
Each image is a hint. You combine the hints to find the answer.
Another note: With the advent of the Internet we also have google and IMDB. If I posted any actors, or words it would mean an instant guess. It is hard to find images are not be “googleable”
Those are the main points. From here on I go through the reasons why I choose the images I do. If you don’t care you can skip to the conclusion.
The image you mentioned is from Underworld. Every scene either had people that were instantly recognizable or so dark you could not see anything at all. Once again the key was to make guesses and put the pieces together. That movie was guessed on the second image by ChefGarret.
Getting screen shots from a movie is not very hard. But getting a screen shot that is not blurry, contain some helpful content and do not include any actors or words is difficult. Most movies it takes me 15 minutes to get all the images I need. But some movies, like Underworld and Star Wars, took me close to an hour to get good images. I was not totally happy with my selection of the first Underworld pic but it was the best I could get out of a very popular, recognizable, and recent movie
I am also trying to keep the game fair for everyone. If someone only visits the form once a day or only every couple of days and I was posting easy images we would be going through a couple of movies a day easily. The scores would be so high and move soo fast there would be no point in casual posters playing.
If I were really trying to kick people’s ass I would gather more than an average of 5 images per movie. Here is the gauge I think of when I am taking images:
First pic. You would get it if you memorize the whole movie.
Second pic. You would get it if you watched the movie a week ago or watched it a lot.
Third pic. Again, you would get it if you watched the movie a month ago or watched it a couple of times.
Fourth pic. If you have seen the twice.
Fifth pic and on. You can get the movie even if you have never seen it. I will contain famous actors or “googleable” items.
And the gauge will change based on the age and popularity of the movie. Movies that are older and might not have been so popular will be easier to guess. Star Wars movies were the hardest to guess but they were still guessed in two images. Most movies are guessed in two images.
In conclusion:
If it were easier it would be a bum rush to post and there would not be any challenge. Whoever got to the topic first would get the point. But I have tried to make the game for everyone forum campers and casual posters alike, people who do not own any movies and people who live at Blockbuster.
If more people feel the game is overly difficult I will change it.
Edit: I also want to mention that all the screen shots that I post are full and complete shot. No cropping or bluring. What I post is what was shown on the big screen. |

Thanks for the in-depth answer And, now that I know the methods you use and that there IS a method to the madness I can understand it and even appreciate the system itself. I also know that this is meant to be a stumper game and not a race-to-guess game (even though that's what a few guesses have comcnluded to) I commend you for steping up and explaining your method and hope others with their own versions do the same.
