Captain America, Nick Fury, Thor and more!
by Stax
April 28, 2006 - Remember, you heard these two Marvel movie scoops here at IGN FilmForce first: Edgar Wright is writing and directing Ant-Man and David Self is scripting Captain America.
In addition to confirming our past exclusives, The Hollywood Reporter has the rundown on a slew of other comics-to-film projects in-development at Marvel Studios. Nearly all the projects will be funded via Marvel's recently acquired $525 million warchest, which guarantees them complete creative control.
Marvel's highest priority projects are reportedly Iron Man, with Jon Favreau now onboard to direct, and Hulk 2. Neither project is covered by the Marvel warchest; Iron Man is at Paramount, while Hulk 2 is at Universal. THR says X-Men: The Last Stand co-screenwriter Zak Penn has been tapped to script Hulk 2. Captain America is said to be the next big priority for Marvel after Iron Man and Hulk 2.
The trade says Wright (Shaun of the Dead) will co-script Ant-Man with Joe Cornish for Big Talk Prods. They also report that Andrew Marlowe (Air Force One) is penning Nick Fury, while Mark Protosevich (Poseidon) will script Thor.
"In the comics, the stories that appealed to me most were the features called Tales of Asgard," Protosevich advised THR. "They were very much based on the traditional Norse myths and how the relationship between being like Thor and Loki and Thor and Odin, and how these beings manifested themselves. I don't want to give too much away, but I will say the movie will take place in the world of myth and legend but will not betray some of the thematic elements of the comics that made them so appealing, like the idea of a god growing to truly understand man."
Screenwriter David Self spoke with the trade as well and provided fans with an idea of what to expect from the Captain America movie. "He's a Norman Rockwell character who is faced with today's America and is forced to look at his own past, things in the '40s that weren't necessarily what they were cracked up to be," the scribe said, adding, "and also how today's country may be different than it looks."
In related news, Marvel Studios topper Avi Arad spoke with Business 2.0 Magazine about the studio's upcoming slate, and revealed quite a bit about Hulk 2.
"The (first) Hulk movie was a study of anger, and people wanted a popcorn movie," Arad explained. "Our Hulk will be a diet Hulk. Lighter. Focusing on the love story, Hulk as hero, and his battle with the villain." Arad advised the magazine that the villain of Hulk 2 will be Abomination, of whom Arad said, "He's capable of amazing feats." |
Hoorah for potential successes! |
