Kissing Frogs.

Hah... Uhm, hm. I'm still in doubt whether it was actually me that wrote this story or not. I think I may be a closet-romantic. :] So yeah, just a short story. Nothing special, I just thought that it would bring a smile to some of your faces.



As she brought the frog to her lips, the girl felt a stab of doubt and paused, feeling foolish. What in heaven’s name was she doing? Here she was, a perfectly rational young woman and one of the more emotionally mature people she knew (including adults), and she was kissing a frog! It wasn’t a very attractive frog either, with brown and green splotches instead of delicate spots and big cloudy eyes. Why does it even matter if it’s attractive or not? Kneeling on the concrete by the side of the neighborhood pool after it closed for the night, she knew the setting wasn’t exactly romantic. Romantic?! Was she expecting a prince or something? The girl shook her head, trying to rid herself of the rational-fantastical mêlée in her mind.

But this frog! This frog was so, how could she put it, princely. She had found him swimming in the kiddie pool; whose chemicals she knew would eventually kill him. Every night she would come to save frogs from the pool waters and its drains, and when she had dipped her hands in the water for this particular frog, he had simply hopped into her cupped palms. It had surprised her so much that she nearly fell into the pool, which wasn’t exactly hard to do considering her precarious frog-saving position. He hadn’t moved much since then; only his throat charmingly inflating and deflating. As she watched his throat, she felt the rational side of her brain begin to lose. You never know until you try, right?

She lifted her hands the extra inch, puckered her lips, and closed her eyes. Her warm, soft lips met cold, wet froggy lips and she felt a rush go through her that she couldn’t really understand. She kissed him! She finally kissed the frog! It wasn’t as bad as she thought it was going to be, and he surprisingly held still, but where was the puff of smoke? The magical sound? The relieved prince? A sharp dissonance interrupted her sphere of fantasy and she leaped sideways into the pool, perhaps a bit like a frightened frog. Her eyes automatically closed against the stinging chlorine water and suddenly her mind registered what the sound was. Laughter! Someone was laughing at her!

She shot up, heart skipping a beat, to see the source of the laughter. The color drained from her face when she saw a dark-haired man rolling around near the entrance of the pool, clutching his stomach. She didn’t recognize him, but she was sure he wasn’t any sort of prince. Completely at loss for what to do, she simply sat and felt warmth return to her face, this time in the form of a creeping blush. Goodness was she embarrassed. Someone had actually seen her kiss the frog. She’d been caught, red…lipped? Her heart skipped again as he started to stand up, still chuckling.

“Did you really expect the poor frog to turn into a prince, or were you doing it for kicks?” She started again at the sound of his voice and tried to ignore her own reaction to the handsome line of the man’s jaw and the graceful way in which he moved.

She tried to speak, but her voice came out in a (oh, goodness gracious) croak. Clearing her throat, she spoke sharply, “Don’t insult me. I wanted to t-thank him for being a good frog.” The instant the words left her mouth, she mentally smacked herself and physically winced. She sounded like a complete lunatic.

He chuckled again, and she unconsciously registered how much it pleased her to hear the warm sound. “Well, your frog prince seems to have disappeared.” She blinked, trying to process what he said and finally realizing that the frog had indeed mysteriously vanished. However, she didn’t have much time to think because suddenly he was in the water, moving towards her. When he reached her she could only look up at him, flabbergasted, while he grinned down at her. Those eyes of his looked vaguely familiar. He crouched, and then slid one arm under her back and the other beneath her knees, easily lifting her up and standing again. Her heart skipped another beat, and she mused that all this was taking years off of her heart’s life span. He smirked, she stared some more. “How about I take over for him?” She suddenly realized why she had recognized his dream-like eyes and was strangely at ease as they closed and his face moved towards hers.

Maybe kissing frogs wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

sweet!!! I wish frogs did that in my back yard...but still excellent bit of writing, very intriguing. I especially liked the way you described the bit of indecision with the froggy and then went on about how handsome it was. me gusta!!!!
