Could be a good thing. I might start leaning more toward ATI over Nvidia if this happened...

RBC Capital Markets industry trackers believe microprocessor manufacturer could be picking up the graphics-card maker.

Microprocessor maker AMD might soon make a move to acquire graphics-card manufacturer ATI Technologies, according to a pair of analysts from RBC Capital Markets. In a note to investors about AMD rival Intel, Apjit Walla and Jas Rashid said their "recent checks in the PC food chain" have indicated that a marriage between the two companies could be coming soon.
The pair notes that the idea of Intel or AMD purchasing a graphics-chip maker has been batted around for a while, and that the idea falls in line with AMD's stated intent to increase its capacity in the coming years. As for ATI being singled out as the target of an acquisition, the pair called the company "a rare buy in the semiconductor space right now."
The pair of analysts didn't focus so much on how AMD would benefit from the move but did say an acquisition of ATI by AMD "would obviously be a clear positive for the graphics space." The stock market's focus was similarly one-sided. ATI stock closed up almost nine percent to $16.51 today, while AMD shares rose more modestly, a little over one percent to $30.89. |

Hey, if AMD acquires ATI, maybe that'll mean that ATI won't be the "buy cheap or spend a paycheck" company anymore. I used to have a 9800 Pro SE (not a cheap card, but not anywhere near expensive), and I had to get a new card this year because it eventually stopped being able to maintain itself for more than five minutes. Usually involved my computer shutting off if I attempted to actually open a program. I figure it was overheating - the GPU fan would be *hot* to the touch. AMD could teach them a thing or two about not having to buy a new heatsink for a product just in order to be able to use it in normal circumstances.
Been reading reviews on newegg, and apparently every "brand" of certain of the ATI cards has eventually gone belly-up, just like mine. This could be a very good move for ATI, since it appears that in certain corners of the Internets, they're getting a reputation for not caring about the "casual performance gamer" that wants to play a game with good settings without shelling out $300+ on a card. |

Woo! I already lean ATI AND AMD...I'm ahead of the pack!
It took 3 years for my ATI card to start overheating but then I bought a nifty new fan for it and it works better than ever. ^_^
Really don't care what anyone says..I loves my ATI cards. Plus they are used in Gamecubes and will be the graphics card for the Wii. So it also makes me a Nintendo supporter. MWAHAHA! |

Hrm. Putting ATI and AMD together would be very interesting. Might finally convince me to buy a good ATI card and not have to worry about video card problems for a long time. |

haha. NVidia for life here. What needs to happen is video cards just need to cost less. It's really getting to be a pain with all the new cards coming out all the time so you never know when to buy one. Then if you wait and do you end up with the chance that you got nerfed and capped due to game reqs. Anyhow though. I hope AMD helps ATI out. |

I, too, prefer Nvidia... but... Looks like it's done.
Afterward... AMD's stock drops... but ATIs skyrockets...
What does that tell you?
Maybe AMD will make ATI better.

Chip manufacturer picks up graphics card maker for $5.4 billion in cash and shares; company promises "more integrated solutions."
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot

On Friday, Reuters reported that a rumored deal that would see microprocessor manufacturer AMD acquire graphics card maker ATI was close to complete. Today, it became official.
Sunnyvale, California-based AMD today announced that it has come to an agreement to purchase ATI (headquartered in Markham, Ontario, Canada) in a deal worth roughly $5.4 billion in cash and shares. Each company's board of directors voted for the deal unanimously; now the acquisition must meet the approval of ATI shareholders and US and Canadian regulatory bodies before it can be finalized.
AMD has said that ATI will continue to make the specialized, high-end graphics cards it was known for, but that it will also work more on integrated microprocessors and graphics processors. The company expects earnings per share to increase slightly next year, and "meaningfully" in 2008. Also by 2008, AMD anticipates its operating expenses to be down by about $75 million.
An ATI representative told GameSpot that any layoffs due to the merger would likely be minimal. "It's too early to say, but for the most part there's no overlap within the company," the representative said. ATI currently employs 4,200 people, and the post-merger AMD is expected to employ approximately 14,900.
As of press time, shares of AMD were off a little more than 4 percent from Friday's closing price, trading down $0.80 to $17.46. On the other hand, shares of ATI received a significant boost on the news, jumping more than 18 percent, up $3.03 to $19.59. |
