Post the coolest platform video game levels you've ever gone through. Yep, that means bring out your old Genesis or Super Nintendo and think about Mega Man, Sonic, Mario, and all those other sweet platformers!

Here we go for my picks:

-------------------------------
Death Egg I - Sonic & Knuckles (Genesis)

Dark scenery, lots of embedded machines, cool warping special effects, lotsa lights and something I have never seen in a platformer anywhere else: a backdrop that doesn't move. Doesn't matter where you go, everywhere, you'll be looked down by the huge supercomputer in the center of the Egg. The action is speedy, and you gotta have some quick reactions to get through this one unharmed.

***

Fire City - Castlevania Dracula X (SNES)

I can't help but LOVE the fire effect of the stage. I feel it sets a really good mood to the game and packs action right from the start.

***

Burning Hamlet I - High Seas Havoc (Genesis)

Another fire level, except this time the whole backgrop is ondulating due to the heat. A huge fireball is constantly chasing you, killing you in one shot should you dare touch it. You need to make a quick escape, extinguishing smaller fires on the way and going across laval pits.

***

The Escape - Aladdin (Genesis)

More fire! This time you have to go through caves, escape huge falling boulders and go across even more lava pits to survive this one.

***

Factory - Contra Alien Wars (SNES)

Really scary level. I love it because of the monsters, especially the giant mech-spider that's trapping you for almost half of the level. Add to that a spotter bomber copter, zombie twins and a huge mother-zombie of sorts. Classical, but so loveable!

***

Electrical Station - Jurassic Park (Genesis)

The level is very dark, with lots of traps and short circuits. Just the mood of the level makes me love it, especially the soundtrack.

***

Pumping Station - Jurassic Park (Genesis)

Another one I like for the soundtrack. The level itself is also very well-designed, complete with pipes, tanks, pumpers and jets all over the place. Hint: Drop a flash bomb anywhere in the level to screw up the fan sprites. They will turn white and will give off the illusion they are going at a higher speed than normal.

***

Scrap Brain I & II - Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis)

Although not as good as the Death Egg, this is one of those back-to-basics level that shows you the good old side of Robotnik: industrial, polluting and really, really dirty. I've always loved factory levels, and this one sure kicks ass.

***

Highway - Mega Man X (SNES)

The intro level! The music's great and the scenery is pretty impressive. This one level got me hooked to the MMX series (yet, I dislike the older MM games with a passion.) Puts you right into the action, just like in Castlevania.

***

Vampire Dragon's Castle - Wonder Boy III (Sega Master)

This has to be one of the most twisted levels I've seen in the WB series. You have to transform into a mouse, a pirhana, a lion and finally a hawk to get through all the traps, nooks and crannies of the place. Add to that a furious amount of monsters and a really, really good need for strategies (some places will downright kill you if you don't know how to use your items properly) and you've got yourself one super level. Add to that the entire enemy line of the game in one castle, a pitch black section, an underwater section and a scary pre-boss corridor; man, totally awesome!

***

MEKA Dragon's Labyrinth - Wonder Boy III (Sega Master)

In WB2, you will curse. A lot. The castle is extremely complicated, and very tough to get through (especially with the joystick I had!) But in WB3, since this is a continuation, you redo the stage as an intro, making it thus more simple for the n00bs. Where in WB2 you had to do the entire castle in some kind of G-shaped path, WB3 takes you a bit forward, down two levels, turn left, and here you go. Not only that, but you start all mighty and powerful, as if you were just continuing WB2. Things get sweet when you enter the pre-boss corridor: it's pure metal. And the dragon you fight happens to be a robot dragon! Top it off with an escape from the castle falling apart and you've got a really tight first level for the game.

***

The Tower of Pisa - Castlevania Bloodlines (Genesis)

This one is really twisted, and I love it. The music is scary and you get all sorts of weird renditions of the tower in one level. This includes: inside the tower when it's at a 45-degree angle, outside the tower and circling it as you hop onto floating platforms, inside the tower and climbing it while it's going one way and another and falling apart, topped by a boss battle at the very top, giving you only five sprite widths of area to work on. Sweet!

Most all of the Sonic stages were my faves, but one in particular stands out:

Spring Yard Zone (Originally Sparkling Zone) from Sonic 1

The reason I remember this one so well is the music. It probably had the most addictive music known to man. I havn't played the game in years, and I could sing you the entire thing on the spot. Probably because it was always the level I got stuck on when playing thru when I first got my Genesis. I heard the song so much I even made up lyrics to it, LOL
