So I bought FF 12 and I'm friggin hooked.
1) The fight engine is like Star Ocean or so I've heard.
2) The characters voices can be really annoying at times.
3) The development system rocks!
Your input? |

Hmm, still sinking my teech into it. Only a couple hours in, I really have to adjust my veiw point to get used to this vibrant, busy world. Vaan's non CG character model is terrible, and the painted on abs are increbily distracting when Im trying to take Vaan, and this game, seriously.
The over all visual style is basically apealing to the young japanese crowd and many of the characters are starting to look similar. Vaan strongly resembles Tidus, Ashe strongly resembles Yuna, Bathalier stongly resembles Seifer...frankly its becoming a little old. I personally think that they should have jsut switched the character models for Vaan and his brother - who looked like a new, fresh character, but nay, another cropped blonde.
Ill be frank. I dont like the battle system so far. If I wanted to play Star Ocean, Id play Star Ocean. The menu system to me is a staple of the FF mechanics, although the seemsless battle transitions are pretty interesting.
Im giving it a fair chance, since Im only in the sewers and very early in the game, it has a lot of time to move me. Im hoping the political drama can rival the storylines of FFT and thats the mind set Im trying to adopt as I delve further into 12. Please be good, please be good >_< |

I'd say it is more like FFXI's battle system, but not crappy.
Honestly, I am beginning to think that this game could actually be one of the best Final Fantasy games I have played since VI. I think the fact there is actual gameplay to go along with the movies is something to do with it for this game.
But to me, it seems they tried to give the game a more traditional PC style feel more so than a console RPG feel (specifically with the battle system). That could be why I am liking it more as I have been more on the PC side of RPGs these days.
And realize this is coming from a person who thought all the PSX and PS2 Final Fantasy games were overrated and pretty dull. And yes, that includes VII (not so much dull, but completely overrated). Hell, my only real complaint at this time is that there is no progressive scan mode, but it looks nice without it (though thank you for the 16:9 option as that really helps a lot on my TV). |

I'm diggin it. I'm rescuing Ashe in the imperial guard area atm (the place with the red webbed laser detecters) The game is fun, I really like the liscense system. The chain system keeps grinding levels from being boring, and the fact that monsters don't have gil (you have to sell their pelts/whatever) is actually a step in the right direction. The bounty system is fun too, but I don't like how I had to make Vaan learn magick in order to kill the cactoid with the flower on it's head. I agree with Dai to a point, Vaan's painted-on abs are pretty annoying, but I don't really that much of a difference between older FF characters and this one. Vaan's face is more slender than Tidus's, Ashe does NOT look like Yuna at all. However, I have noticed that since 8 their have never been hefty characters. I have difficulty determining FMV from real-time, which is cool. I LIKE the battle system, it differs from SO battles in that you don't go to a new screen, and frankly I enjoy the SO battle system, so I praise their similarities. I love the fact that I recognize places/characters from the FFT/FFTA series (Montblanc! Wooh!) And I'm fining the game to be a joy to play. I didn't really have any expectations as far as particular things in this game (battle system, leveling system, summoning, etc.) so I can't really say I'm let down at all. Oh, and the bonus disc that comes with the Collectors Edition has a "history of Final Fantasy" segment on it which was quite memorable to watch.
Dai, I'm pretty dissapointed is this:

Please don't call FF12 Star Ocean if all you're comparing is the battle system.
My only complaint so far (Vaan's torso aside) is that it seems to be linear ala FF10. SQUEENIX, bring back non-linear world exploration PLEASE!!!!

Well it seems a bit less linear, although it still has the path put out for you, at the very least they stuffed it so full of sidequests that go everywhere, it kinda helps take your mind of it. The hunt missions, they be a godsend and pretty fun to do most of the time.
Although i'm bummed since my summonings got wooped by the last hunt I did. .....Freakin toad. |

Like I said, Im ginving it a fair chance, in fact Im warming up to it a bit.
But If I dont get a mother fackino Bangaa in my party, Im gonna get pissed. Theres 4 races in Ivalice and three man sized ones. I already know I get a Veira, but no Bangaa makes Dai a sad pony. |

11 hrs in roughly, so far I rate it 8.5 out of 10. I'm loving it, we'll see if it maintains or gains momentum enough to keep me hooked or not, that is the real trick. They've got me, but can they keep me. |

I was tempted to get it then remembered I have Red Steel reserved on my Wii...So I didn't. ^_^
I'll Steal Terins copy when he starts working for my company. |

I can't say how many hours into it I am since I'll leave the game running while I sleep, lol. I haven't gotten summons yet, sooo.... I'm not as far as Girkon.

PS - I hear ya about the Bangaa, but I don't remember any of em being introduced as a main character. OH! OH! OH! The bonus disc that comes with the collectors edition, talks about FF13!!!

From what I hear the Strahl is opened later in the game for free exploration!
As for the painted on abs I think the cell-shading used is great but a bit non-descript. To me, Ashe does look like Yuna. I think it's the hair mostly.
I just got onto the Leviathan and had to quit for the week (!) but asap I will resume my assault. I very fond of the license system and again agree with Terin about the Loot dynamic. I had no idea at first, so I had poor equipment for a long while but once I realized I was quite pleased.
Dai, Sorry bro, no Bangaa. But I hope this story line stays solid too. There's nothing worse than a crappy ending to a great beginning.
GAAZ tell me how the Wii turns out. It is today, yes? |
