Well, nothing has been said for sure just yet, but a new company has come forward to offer help without Sony having to give in to Immersion.

Personally, I hope they jump at it. But somehow, I doubt it.

SplitFish Could Make Sony's SIXAXIS Rumble
It's another 'if the price is right' situation.

Immersion's well documented legal mess with Sony Computer Entertainment regarding their rumble/force feedback technology still hangs in legal limbo. There may be another solution to Sony's rumble, if they want it, according to hardware manufacturers SplitFish.

The Edmonton-based company claims their new dynamic force feedback system will work in Sony's PlayStation 3 controller, SIXAXIS. SplitFish's PR recognizes that Immersion's patents required them to approach the problem of rumbling the SIXAXIS from a different angle (rather than infringing on Immersion's "rotating mass force" system).

Does this mean Sony's SIXAXIS is set to rumble sometime this year with help from SplitFish? Not quite. The press release, issued by SplitFish, has no ties to Sony (if they did, there would've been a joint release announcing the partnership and Sony released nothing this morning). SplitFish is announcing that they have the ability to make Sony's controller rumble without infringing on the existing Immersion patents. Should Sony decide that rumble technology is something they want to employ in a SIXAXIS revision, SplitFish may have a solution -- if Sony is willing to pay.

Well we all knew the controller could handle it despite Sony's PR BS about it interfering. Sony can either pay Immersion (on top of what they will eventually have to pay anyway) or pay this new company (on top of whatever they will have to pay Immersion anyway). Whoever it is that is making this decision should be fired. He/she is costing their shareholders millions. There's no way around this and they're just making thier eventual payout grow larger and larger each day ("Your honor, Sony is dragging this case on and costing me more in legal fees"). Even tho I'm sure that's their strategy, hoping Immersion will go bankrupt, at some point the court is going to say "that's enough" and the final judgement could possibly be record breaking. Personally I hope this combines with the PS3 pricing debacle to cause their game dept to go under.

They should invest more in increasing their Damage Control dept instead of their Spin Doctoring dept.

Well I surely don't agree with you there.

Sony has a number of good franchises that I want to see.

I dontnow, nor did I ever give half a crap about rumble. Im too busy focusing on the game to think about what my fingers are up to. As far as Im concerned, Id just as soon the damn controller wasnt there.

The hallmark of a good controler set up and design is that I see it, learn it, and forget about it. The more I have to think about what the controller is doing, the less Im thinking about the game.

Honestly Dai, I'm with you. As a matter of fact, my PS2 controller is currently hooked to an extension cord that doesn't allow the feedback signal to go from the ps2 to the controller.

I don't miss it really.
